ive got several kabars, one being a short black handled kabar that i use daily for work (opening boxes and such) its got a powdercoated blade that is getting worn and scratched up, if i can remove the powder coat could i cold blue the steel? how would this look?

does any body else have any pictures of modified kabars?

Assuming its high carbon you could cold blue it with good results. The various kabars are usually 1095.

Unless you prefer the look of bluing Id see about getting it recoated either by KaBar or someone else. The coatings are generally far more corrosion and wear resistant.

there 1095 steel, do you know how much it would cost to have it tefflon coated? a co workers knife has that coating, seems pretty trick. also, how much would it cost for kabar to restore my coating?

Your only real option is to cold blue it after stripping the old finish.

Since it is assembled you can't teflon coat it because that requires baking at least 300F.

Same way with hot bluing.

I would bead blast the blade and cold blue it.....that will be a tough finish.

the problem with bead blasting is that it dont leave the surfice completly smooth, i would have alot of hand sanding to do.

ive got a buffer setup that i use with a heavy compound and water that would remove the powdercoating quite quickly and not heat the metal. i would really like to blue the whole knife so i guss repenning is also a option.

they suggested that rough finish to help keep the blueing from scratching off. plus it is non relfective which looks really cool when its blued too. i use oxpho-blue because it has superior waer resistance for a cold blue.
