I'm pretty sure I'll never tire of catching these little beasts on a flyrod.
I'm sure I'll never tire of eating them. Ken.

I've never caught anything on a flyrod, just a regular spinning rig, but 'gills sure are fun to catch and eat :) I like 'em at least a much as smallmouths (which is practically sacrilege now that I live down here)... not as much of a fight but easier to find and a whole lot tastier.

They are so thick in a lake near where I grew up that you will hook one as soon as the lure touches the water. Then usually at least once per trip, if you toss the lure over the edge of the boat just to get it out of the way while dealing with the fish you just caught, another fish will take the lure right next to the side of the boat. Bluegill are a blast.

Oh man, I spent many summers growing up casting a 2wt floating line for some spooky post spawn bream at a 4 acre pond near my grandparents home. Still not tired of it! I like to use a #14 bead head nymph stripped somewhat quickly, it will trigger an instinct strike almost every time. Tasty little buggers for sure!

I agree with you Ken,bluegill is the best tasting freshwater fish there is.

Calvin up here we have walleyes, northern pike, yellow perch, crappies, and of course bluegills.
I've eaten my share of walleyes here and in canada (as well as the rest of them) and while others
may disagree I'll take the bluegill every time. The ones we get really early <50 water temp and
ice fishing are something else for taste.
Ken.

I ate my belly full last night! Nothing better than a pan fried bluegill.
I got a small mess of these last week.

Holy smokes, look at that fatty! Don't forget to snag a few frogs to throw in the pan along side!

i need to try and make it out fishing before august while i am able. a buddy has a pond with some gills that should be 12"+ by now. we caught a bunch back in 08 that were 10" long and 2" thick.

there is nothing better than fried gills (or any fish for that matter).

Nice gills all round. Sweet meat. Fly rod just makes it better. Here in lake Erie gills are plenty right now , crappie moved off. Perch are huge, but small groups at times. , walleyes just getting going.
All we need is for this weather to get right and fun is in.

If I was caught bug slinging for anything other than brookies, bows, or browns down here I'd be shot...

So I use my sons learning to fish as an excuse to catch gills... lol.

As far as gills,we get the bigger ones during ice fishing..I would take all the gills, love them. We have to clean small ones if we want them..Just for some reason not that big here..
If I ever get my carb. on my boat fixed right ,I will show you a catch of walleyes and perch.
Pumping at 10.5 pounds needs to BE around or under 7 pounds. Starting to really tick me off. Going to shim out the pump next.
These fish are now at 52 foot of water and easy picking.. Lake Erie..
