I did a search here on this and saw a thread from a few years ago that didn't really go far nor address my specifics? So here it goes.

Have any of you guys been able to dye/blue/change color of their blades using things such as lemons, potatoes, apples, pumpkin juice? I tried apple last night and nothing. I tried a little lemon today and while it looked like the treated area has a slight blue streak there was also the formation of orange spots semilar in look to rust. So I quickly cleaned up the blade.

Any success or horror stories? Thanks. :D

I had the best luck by cutting cooked beef. Something in the cooked fat leaves a nice blue hue on satin blades.

I discovered this after cutting up 2 tons of meat at Fogo's in 05.

Semichrome polish was the only thing that would removed it.

Very interesting. So I guess I need to cut up 2 tons of meat. Anyone up for a BBQ? ;) Seriously though, thanks for that info. :)

I just cut down our old guava tree as we are going to replace it with something we like a bit more. I hacked some limbs up with the BA-E and noticed that there was purpleish/blueish tinge on the blade. Maybe I need me some guavas?

More ideas guys? Thanks.

I understand that radish juice is used to darken steel on traditional Japanese guards.

From what I've heard gun blue will not work on INFI....something about the carbon in it not being high enough?? Works great on A2 though! :D

You read my mind...I was just going to ask.

Generally you need heat to get the patina to form rapidly so you boil water, or the etchant and use this to heat up the blade. INFI is air hardening with a high chrome content so it doesn't tend to want to form a patina. It will if you soak it long/hot enough though.

I once sat on my SHBM and got it tan camo colored naturally.

So much for the mashed potatoes with gravy that I was going to have with dinner. Thanks! :barf:

Skunk pees on his INFI, but it's usually because he's had too much to drink and the bathroom is just waaaay too far away.

He says it forms a nice "pee-tina."

OK really I am serious here.

I have heard that the origins of the term browning is that the early settlers would put their metal farm tools into piles of cow dung and that this would oxidize the surface (brown) and prevent rust. Anyone have more info on this?

Age of the dung?

Time of emersion?

Type of metals?

yah, how do you think Jerry creates his camo coatings. He doesn't provide his employees with Scotch and Chilly because he's nice.

that's how i tell the diff between infi and others

So what you guys are saying is that I could pay to have Busse employees pee and poop on my INFI. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm! Tempting..... I'm going to have to think about this one. ;)
