I would like to blue or darken the pocket clip on my Vantage. Just don't like how shiney/silver is it (yes a small thing I know). Is it something you can blue? Flame it and then oil quench it?

If anyone has done it please let me know how. Open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Perhaps you can order one from Buck that comes with the Vantage Force, they're black.

Maybe roughen it up a little and some black nail polish ???
Either that or take it to a powder coat shop...

Jerad,
Thanks, the blasting sounds like a good idea! Wonder if a Scotch Brite pad would give it a satin look also? May need to try that.

I think the other finishes will wear off too quickly to be worth doing.

May try to flame/oil quench one over the Christmas break.

I just read this and said, "sounds like a good idea!". So I went straight out to the garage and flamed/heated my clip to cherry red with a water quinch. did this three times and each time it got a little darker. Finished with a green scotchbrite rub. Mine tuned out with a nice dark antique color. It still feels strong and springy. Now I'd like to do the piece that the clip attaches to. (sorry, no pics.) hope this helps.

Ha, heat it and quench it in used lube oil and it will be Black as coal and not easily sanded off. DM

I thought this sounded like a good idea so I tried it and it came out just as I expected. I really like what the heat did to the metal.

The clip is subdued now. I dont know if its just me being over observant but I can see a knife clip from 100 yards. I dont want anybody seeing my knife at least until its to late.

I've done the Magic Marker thing. Works for awhile, not permanent. Stainless is hard to blue. Like mbjan, I can spot a pocket clip at a hundred paces. I always thought that I was just programmed to look for them, but, some are just too obvious. In faded jeans, not too bad, but, in the dark pants that I used to have to wear to work, looked like a headlight. I still carry a 112 on my belt that I hope will attract the most attention and leave the Vantage unnoticed.

I'm going to have to try the used motor oil thing, thats the second time I've heard someone suggest it. Even if it does not work, it gives me an excuse to torture some metal!
I did hear from our heat treat guy that he was once handed some pocket clips and told they were stainless. He ran them as you should for stainless and they came out gold in color! Paul Bos told him they were actually made of titanium for that to happen. I'm already planning on having him run some 560 sides through the furnace to see what happens!
