Bluing Infi?

Has anyone ever tried bluing a Busse with something like Cold Blue?

I've got my first ever taste of Infi (Comp SJ) coming from the last gaanza :D

It doesn't work, only the older A2 blades can be blued, sorry.

Actually, here's a thread from the ScrapYard forum where someone stripped and blued a SARsquatch. It seemed to take the color just fine, evidenced by the pics.

Apparently it was done with one of the simple Outers brand cold blue kits.

If your comp finish has a healthy layer of decarb (likely) then it will take a blue. If by some chance the decarb has been removed or is thin in some areas it will be uneven in appearance, but honestly probably will still look good. Whatever you do don't rework the finish too much before blueing, underneath the paper thin decarb layer is infi in its full, blueing-proof glory.

Because infi acts very much like a stainless steel, more stainless than ATS 34. Out of the heat treating oven and before finish grinding (double cut, satin blades) there is a layer of decarb that will react to blueing and can rust. Once removed like on a satin blade the steel is very resistant to staining, you can leave blueing solution puddled on it for a while and it won't even darken it.

That's just been my experience Keith. I've had ATS34, AUS-8 (beadblasted mind you), G2, and S30v rust on a humid day at work. Not just dusty rust either, any rust covered a tiny- medium sized pit in the steel. While I don't pocket carry my infi I also don't baby it after use, they usually get used, then either cleaned or (more often) put away dirty until I need to use them again. Any rust that I've found was wiped off rather easily with a finger and only left a dark grey patina underneath. I suppose there should be a fair test, expect an infi vs ats34 "stuck in the open bed of my truck for a few days to see how they rust" test soon".

I'm wondering if hot blue would work actually, but while there's been some discussion about it I don't think anyone's stuffed it in a blueing tank yet.
