If I wanted to blue a tactical fixed blade and the tang, can I just use cold bluing solution or should I have my gunsmith hot blue the whole thing? Cory

Either will work...the hot Blueing will last a little longer I think..
Allot of guys use the backed on lacquer to color there blades...If you bead blast it you will have a dull finish anyway...You can also etch the carbon Blades in Ferric chloride and thus turn them gray and then lightly scotch bright or buff to take the Black residue off the blade thus giving you a dar blade that wont scratch off very easily..
Good luck,
Bruce

Brownells sale a cold blue that is all most
as good as hot blue. It`s been awhile so I don`t
remember the name. I think it`s call oxy blue
but don`t hold me to it

The product Brownell's sells is called "Oxpho blue" (sp?). I've used the cream type (doesn't run off the piece being blued) with good results. It does take several coats, but it works pretty quickly. It seem to help on larger pieces, like gun barells to work it in with 000 or 0000 steel wool. Oh, and be sure to wear gloves, there's a lot stuff in cold blue you don't want to absorb through your skin!

I know it says "cold blue" but I have found that if you heat the metal it will take better. I saw a couple of guys at a gun show doing that and went home and tried it with what ever cold blue that I had on hand. Really helps.

BTW, just hot to the touch, don't over do.
