I was looking at getting a Blur. I can get a 14c28n for about $47-48 or a s30v for about $70. Is there s30v really worth 30% more? This would be my first Kershaw so I am unfamiliar with the Sanvic steel.

Worth is a relative term, has a different meanting to everyone. I like my S30V Blur quite a bit.

For me, I like 14c28 fine, so I'd probably stick with the standard models (ideally the one with serrations, but again, that's my personal preference). A lot of folks would consider S30V a significant upgrade, though, so for them it might be worth the extra $20ish.

So really, you need to ask yourself if S30V is worth more than 14c28 to You.

I dont know. I never owned a 14c28.

I do own s30v, 154cm and VG-10 knives however. I guess I just dont know how much of a "lesser" steel 14c28 is compared to s30v. If it is anything like 420HC then I will get the S30v.

Others can and may disagree, but I feel that 14C28N is very similar to 154CM or VG10. I like sharpening it. You would not believe just how sharp it can get. There was a thread that likened it to the steel used in shaving razors, go figure that would be why it get razor sharp. I like the Blur platform for S30V, just about the perfect knife.

My original old Blur was 400A or 440A - not 14c28. You bet the S30V was a huge improvement! I just wish I had bought a SG-2 bladed Blur. My JYDII's of Ti & SG-2 are super! S30V is second place, while that original blade metal was better than a sharpenned wood stick - usually.

You can get an S30V blem for $55. That's what I did. Just another option.

As for 14C28N, like Rev, I find that it holds an edge close to VG-10 or 154CM. It takes a fine, razor edge very easily.

Much of the cost difference is in production methods. 14C28N is the hardest steel that they can effectively stamp out, lasers are comparatively expensive to run. That's why there's virtually no change in price between 154CM and S30V in the same knife, but the stamped steel gets a huge discount.

Unless you really hate stonewash I'd go with the s30v. In the Blur the s30v is stonewash and the Sandvik is bead blast. I prefer the look of stonewash and in theory it is more rust resistant but you likely won't have issues with the bead blast finish. Some people think stonewash looks cheap like the knife was unfinished or accidentally scratched but I like the super aggressive stonewash like on the Hogue EX-01. KAI's stonewashes are a bit soft but nice if that's what you like.

I don't like bead blasted blades for EDC. I was going to buy a blem of the S30V and then I found a used one on ebay just a bit cheaper than that.
