Just got my Kershaw Blur in the mail today. It's a good knife overall. My only complaint is that it doesn't really spring closed. Is that just how they are?
I'm also wondering if I should oil the blade? I have the black coated version.

I've only owned 1 so YMMV, mine that is probably 7 years old acts the same way. I think it has to do the the spring for the Assisted Opening. If its smooth and has very little blade play leave it alone just a drop of oil now and then in the pivot. The only issue I've ever had with mine was the pivot screw wanted to back out but some people fix that with blue loctite.

What do you mean when you say 'it doesn't really spring closed'? If you mean to say that there's a bit of resistance when closing the knife, that's because it's an assisted opening knife. They all do that.

Whether you oil the blade or not is up to you. Personally, I don't oil my folders and stainless steel knives much. It doesn't really matter much for the blur, as the blade is pretty unlikely to develop rust (being a stainless steel blade with a DLC coating).

It's assisted "opening"...not "closing" :D

When you close the knife the resistance you're feeling is the torsion bar loading up for the next time you open the knife. Blurs are great knives..have fun with it.

What I mean is when closing the blade it doesn't close on it's own until the tip of the blade is around 1/4 inch from the handle. I have a Delica and the blade will close itself when the tip is 2 inches from the blade and my SOG Flash I closes at about 1 inch. It's not really a big deal. Just wondering if that was how they came.

I think the only type of knife would do that would be a double action automatic. But yeah, assisted openers are only spring assisted on opening, same with both my Leek and Barrage.

Just remembering your other thread on assisted openers, if you ever get a BM Barrage, it will resist you all the way closing, unlike the Kershaw which won't resist closing til you push it past halfway shut.

Edit: I think that's due to the torsion bar Speedsafe in the knife, my Leek also has resistance when it's closing up too. I think the other knives that seem to close themselves is probably due to the detent ball falling into the detent on the blade. Hope this helps.

I think I like the Blur the best of the Kershaw line. Not that I don't like the others! :D

Thats just because they have a closing detent. It has to do with how the tang of the knife interfaces with the lock. It varies knife to knife

I've carried a Blur off and on and mine are the same. The Blur actually has a good "bias toward closure", compared to other assisted opening knives that I have.

I've never had a Blur open by accident.

Congrats on the new purchase! I edc mine in rotation. It carries well and has never given me any problems. I also had to get use to the extra tension when closing the blade. So far no accidental openings. =] Great blade, but I find the handle a bit on the thin side.

It wasn't mentioned if the blade opened with some authority?
My new Blur does not seem to open as "stoutly" as the one I had years ago...

That said - the torsion bar seems to become apparent fairly early on when closing.
Just wondering if you might have a weaker bar?

The knife opens GREAT and It's fun to open. My thumbs sore from opening it so much. Like I said before It isn't a problem. I'm new to knives and all my other knives have a fairly higher tendency to close so I was just wondering if that was how it's suppose to be. Originally I was upset that it didn't come very sharp, but i took it outside today and did some cut tests on water bottles. It did great, Left a few of them cut cleanly in half without the bottom half moving an inch.
