There is a seller on ebay that has photos of new "red box" Blurs with "420HC" etched on the blade.

Are all 14C28N knives going to 420HC?:(

No.

We had a run of a few thousand blades done up in 420HC for a customer. 14C28N is the standard Blur blade steel.

Thanks for the quick response.

It is good to here that 14C28N will be sticking around.

There was also a few thousand 1820HC Need's Work done up in 420HC as well.

No.

The customer's request doesn't make any sense to me.

The only thing I can think of them doing is if the knives were manufactured and purchased cheaper wholesale, and then they sold them at the same price as the 14C28N, hoping the customer would be ignorant of the different steel, so they would make a greater profit. IDK

Perhaps I didn't say it quite properly. We built some 420HC 1820's and 1670's and sold them to a couple of customers.

I ended up with one of the 1670's, but I knew what to expect and have no regrets. I was looking for my first knife, was on a strict budget, got a hankering for a Blur, and went for one of the last of the old 1670s being sold on Amazon for $33; because at the time that was all the Blur I could afford. I knew in advance that the reason for the super-low price was that it was a discontinued steel considered less than fully cutting-edge. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
As it turns out, it's plenty good steel for my purposes; at least in the overall context of a knife as sweet as the Blur, bought by a then- near-pauper.
I'm not beating on the knife, and it's holding the wicked edge it came out of the box with nicely. So I am happy to have had the option.

Thanks Thomas
I've just received one that was on special offer from one of the few knife shops in the UK. They have it marked as 14C28N on their web site then I saw a few sites were offering the 420hc and thought that's might be why it was cheaper.
It's a nice knife though and thanks again for the information.
Chris

I actually rather enjoy the 420HC needs work that I have. I may have to get a sandvik for my next one to compare the steels.

420HC is not a bad steel. Buck uses it a lot. I have several, and they do quite well butchering animals, and in the kitchen. They hold an edge reasonably well, and aren't a bear to sharpen. I like mine a lot. But, now that I've gotten a taste of the 14c28n of Kershaw's, I've been carrying that exclusively. I like it better.:D

I just got my Kershaw Blur from Amazon. Paid 10 dollars more to get the smooth silver coating (60.00 plus shipping). It did come in a red box that says 1670HC high carbon blade. The stamp on the blade says 1670 420HC.....My understanding is that I would get 14C28N....I am so not happy. Where did I go wrong in thinking I was gonna get the 14C28N ?????

I think amazon or ebay is a bit of a crap shoot. I have a blur coming from kershaw guy that I anticipate will be 14C as advertised. I got a rescue blur off of ebay that has no markings on the blade so I have no idea about the steel but for the price if its 440a thats ok. Its marked with a date 7/07 so its old stock and thats why the cheap price. Only going to use it to cut horses free if there is an accident or a seat belt same issue for humans so it will never be dull. strictly for emergencies.

I got a needs work in 420HC at cabelas on clearance. Acutally love the steel. And again the price was very very good.

If you want to get the steel you want and the service you want stay with the good dealers kershaw guy, GP, knife center etc. I like kershaw guy as he is smaller and tries harder.

I returned the crappy 420 HC blurrrrrrr to Amazon. My thought is A good knife is only as good as it's blade. My fault for being a new knife diggin guy. A returning vet friend of mine just gave me a Gerber 06 Auto drop-point with S30V and it got me lookin into different steels. Otherwise I would have probably NOT known the differnce. Paying 60 bucks for a knife no matter how good it feels or how fast it is while knowing it's got a cheap blade just doesn't work for me. I would rather have a cheaper knife like the Kershaw Skyline with the 14C28N blade and be happier. So that is what I ordered today. Hopefully I don't have another disappointment from Amazon.
