In another thread, I was asking which fixed blade to carry in my Maxpedition Fatboy. Well, last night I won an ebay auction for a: Benchmade 210 Activator Knife - PROTOTYPE NOV. 2003, for $86. The blade on this 210 is made of S30V instead of D2, and it comes with a neck sheath in addition to the factory leather sheath. It was described as being never carried or used, but has a couple minor scratches from the Kydex neck sheath. The blade is marked Snody Prototype Nov. 2003. Did I get a good deal on this knife? I was surprised it went so cheap, when I've seen them listing for sale for around $115. I bought it to carry in my Maxpedition Fatboy. Will this knife make a good user? Or, did I doom myself to another "safe queen" by purchasing a rare prototype. Anyone have any info on this proto also? Like the # made. Thanks.

I can't say one way or another whether you should use it. I use all my knives at one time or another. I can comment on the kydex marks though.

I purchased a kydex sheath for the 210 from EDCknives.com. The thing was obnoxiously tight - I could barely get the knife in and I had to use pliers on the sheath to get the knife out. Well, I thought maybe it just needed a "break in" period. I put the knife in and out a few times and the sheath did loosen up somewhat but in the process I managed to somewhat mangle the sheath and scratched the carbon fiber handle of the 210. Duane from EDCknives has a replacement sheath in transit to me. We'll see how it works.

$86 is a good price for that knife.

Thanks for the reply CRH. I went to the EDCknives.com website, and that neck sheath looks like the one that I am getting in the auction. He probably had the same problems that you did with it, but maybe not. I hope that new sheath works for you, I might be in the same situation as you.

I should add that I paid $36 dollars including shipping for the sheath so you got a great value at the auction. I would be very careful with the kydex. Look for scratch marks on the inside of it and see if these correspond to the marks on the knife. Carefully insert the knife and pull it out. If it's a firm hold that's good - it won't fall out. If it's crazy tight then I wouldn't use it. If you end up ordering one from EDC ask Duane to test run it first.

Benchmade has stated in the past that they generally make 25-50 knives marked prototype of each new knife.

The blades are all S30V. The D2 statement was an error that was overlooked.
