As I am sure all BM42 owners know, the cocoon pretty much sucks. I had some extra time today and finally got fed up with the cocoon so I decided to modify it. As we all know, the flap on it is too short so I cut it free and sewed a 1/2" strip of cordura between the cocoon and the flap. Now the flap seems to cover all of the velcro.

I also didn't like the way the cocoon fit over my favorite belt. The belt is 1 1/2" wide and the cocoon was too tight on it. The cocoon wouldn't move when I sat down and was very uncomfortable. I sewed a longer strip of cordura over each of the horizontal carry straps but made it so that I can use a smaller belt with the original straps, or run my wider belt under the new straps but above the old ones. These allow the knife to shift when I sit but hold it firm enough so that the sheath doesn't come with the knife when I draw it out.

I personally think the sheath is fine, with the exception of the flap. it fits really snugly on my belt and doesnt move (which is what I want). maybe its just because i'm wearing two horizontally on my back.

Same here, I am satisfied with mine and would not need to delve into kydex (yet).
And the flap on mine is not too short but perfect.

hey, now dont push kydex aside. it makes for much quicker draws and allows many carry positions. i'm going to be making some concealex sheaths myself pretty soon

Im sure it is

Im just saying there's nothing wrong with the shi**y sheath BM provides for their 42 model (least IMNSHO). I rather like it in that it's so lite and comfortable (cant stand the sheaths that come with jaguars). And my need for kydex (such as quick draw) isn't really a need yet

Dont get me wrong, kydex/concealex is great. Just dont need to spend money on it right now.

EDIT: I should also add that I've stopped carrying butterflys with me when out in public; I'm carrying a folder when I do go out. It's just not a wise choice to carry em while in California. But I flip them like crazy while at home (and have the bruises/cuts to prove it

).

Also, slightly unrelated, but while at my Dad's girlfriend's house for xmas dinner, my Dad was making conversation at the table and brought up my new purchase of a MT LCC D/A to his girlfriend's brother (who's in his 50's). I didn't know him very well so I didn't show him the bolster release just yet. He handled it for about a minute and was quite impressed at the quality of the knife. Then, I thought maybe it would be ok to *really* impress him, so I pressed the bolster and the blade flipped out automatically with a loud/fast KER-THWACK (did I get the term right

). Right then and there the guy just looked at the knife, then at me and with a frown said, "That's illegal! That's illegal!!". I quietly
took the knife back and just said, "yeah but it's sure a fine knife."

I think it'll be a while before people here in CA become comfortable with automatics/balisongs and scary knives in general (if the law ever becomes repealed). I've seen some people here freak out and give me funny stares over my keychain butterfly, which has a dull blade and under an inch.

Anyways, Im not going to get excited about kydex/concealex anytime soon
