How good is the BM 42 steel? I have never had anything made of 12C(can't remember the rest). What is it comparable to? Pros? Cons?
Thanx for any info.:)

Its personally my fav handle out there now:)

I like the weight, strength, and look of it a lot. It will take abuse like no other. Anything from BM is good stuff.

Only the first prod. and the first "run" of BM42's are 12C27 steel. If I'm not wrong, BM is switching to 440C stainless for the 43, 47, and I think the new 42's.
From what I've heard, 12c27 steel is one of the few steels actually produced and engineered for knife blades, (unlike 440c).

I have found mine to be excelent for "shock resistance". I have dropped mine on concrete, pavement, rocks, and assorted other hard stuff, amd there has been almost no damage.

I don't think that I have heard of anyone breaking the blade on their 42. This has been a problem with other steels.

Some other people say that it's too soft to hold a good edge, but I haven't had any problems.

I also heard that the BM42 is the only knife that BM makes that uses this steel, which is also why they are going to switch to 440c.

I'm sure that there has been posts on this in the past.

Any help from the Bretheren???

Edited for mis-numeration...
Brotherhood of the Bali......I kinda like that...:)

My experiences with "Sandvik" steel: not good. In all the knives I own, in all the varying steels, all have performed better than Sandvik. Maybe I just got a "bum" blade, but I haven't found it to be particularly impact resistant - at least, no more so than other stainless steels, anyway.

Just my experience.

Doh! Damn me and my speed reading. I didnt fully read the post, I thought you were talking about handle material. Sorry
