well, i finally lost it, and I'm really mad that I can't use my bali anymore.

I have contacted Benchmade and they said they would not send me one, but they would fix it for me if I sent it there.

Since I dont want to part with my knife for 2-3 weeks, does anyone know if I can get a tang pin from somewhere else.

PS-I'm almost positive that someone has posted here before saying that they requested a handle pin and that benchmade sent them, not only just a handle pin, but both handle pins and a latch pin.

Help

You can't install it yourself anyway. It's a press fit. You need an Arbor press. Even if you have access to the press, you need the tooling. Even if you have the tooling and the press, you need to have the process calibrated and "dialed in". BM is very good on turn-around, especially on fixing stuff that was factory defective. BM knows that they shipped some 42s with the tang pins not pressed properly. That's the issue of "dialed in" that I spoke of earlier. So, they'll fix it and get it right back to you I'm sure.

I had the very same thing happen to my first BM42. They had it fixed (and sharpened I might add), in a little over a week. They're very friendly and helpful. I'd agree with Gollnick in that it's best left in the hands of professionals.

thing is, I live in Pa, and unless I shell out like $25 to get it here and back, ground shipping is going to take around 5-7 days each way. I just want to avoid that as much as possible.

i guess i will just have to part with my knife for a while, maybe buy a 43 while i wait

I've never paid for return shipping myself, especially for factory defect. AND... Priority mail costs $3.95 and takes ~3 days (that is once planes resume flying)... Just send it back. You won't be happy with any other results, most likely.

Chuck, I feel very bad for my previous reply to this thread. I now realize (after reading the thread again) that we are talking about the Tang Pin and not the Pivot Pin, and I apologize for speaking so confidently about the disassembly of the 42. I personally have never removed a tang pin from a balisong and would most definately ship my knife to the manufacturer for repairs. I would recommend that to anyone else, apparently I was in a state of mind where I did not want to hear what I can and cannot do. I am sorry for jumping the gun and comming across as a know-it-all:o

What they said it won't take that long and your garranteed not to screw it up by sending it in. That's what warranties are all about.

Three day UPS is only about $7 one way. When Benchmade fixed my knife they were kind enough to pay the shipping to send it back.

This must be a joke, either you don't have a 42 for a very long time (years) until you fix it yourself, or you just go without it for a few weeks and get one back that is pretty much NIB. I have gone without Bali-Songs for months that were in for warranty and they came back unrecognizeable, one of them was a 45 that the tang pin fell out of, the handles were pretty scratched, the latch and blade had dings, dents, and scratches all over them. I got it back and it looked like the sent me a NIB 45 back to me, it was amazing!! If you send your 42 back just flip a cheapie until the 42 returns and you will appreciate it so much more.

It's all been said..., if you have the tools and experience it's no big deal to fix, but -Be Happy- ;) Send it to "The Real Guys".
