Hi all, first thread here, although I have lurked for a long time. Today I was fortunate enough to pick up a brand new Benchmade 530 for $70! Pretty good price eh? Well as with all new knives the action is a bit stiff and I've been doing the whole "flip it open all day" thing to loosen it up. It makes this odd scratchy sound that really is annoying to me for it being a new knife- Just as its about to catch the lock. Any ideas or similar experiences out there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should not be stiff - particularly when new. You just need to adjusts the pivot screw and lubricate it. That is the proper way to loosen it up. I am sure it will do the trick.
And welcome to the bladeforums of course!

Try giving it a bath. Run it under hot water and open and close it some. Maybe even work some liquid soap into the pivot and the flush it good. I just shake it out when done but many people are worried about rust so you can blow it out with a compressor or a can or compressed air for computers. If you don't have either and still worried about the water a quick shot of WD40 will displace the water. That is actually what it was made for and where the name comes from, Water Displacer. I also don't lube my knives unless one is really stiff, but you can put a drop of oil on the pivot in a day or so when it has had time to dry out. This should take care of the problem if it is being caused by grit and this process is where I would start.

Welcome to BF

The blade opening a little stiff and a noise just before locking, you might want to look on either side of the lock bar and see if one of the omega springs is out of place, maybe an end rubbing the heal of the blade?

Just checked and nothing seems out of place. I'll have to try loosening the pivot point and lubricating it.

There is recess(or cavity) made into the scales on both sides of the knife; this space houses the omega spring.
The space has is made with enough room to accommodate the action of the omega spring itself when the knife is opened and/or closed. It sounds like there is a grain of sand or dirt in this space. So, every time the spring passes by the debris it makes a scratching or scraping noise against the scale. JM2C.
Take a scale off and check it out.:encouragement:

Yup. Either the recesses have a bit of dust or dirt in them, or the pivot is too tight, or...the body screws could be too tight! As strange as it sounds, the 530, by virtue of being so thin, can be finicky about the body screw tensioning as it can flex the scales slightly and apply pressure to the mechanism. Try loosening all of the screws, then retightening them so they're only just gently snugged in place. This can go a long way toward reducing the pressure on the blade tang and/or lock components during operation and give you much smoother action without blade play.
