I handled a bugout and a 531 at a store and decided that for whatever reason I was able to operate the 531 more easily, BUT I hated the handle shape, it was very uncomfortable. BUT #2 - it seemed ripe for new handle scales with a different shape. So I decided to wait until a user came up for sale. Which took about . . . . 5 hours!! OK knife gods, challenge accepted. Except . . . . I'm just too lazy at the moment, b/c properly milling out scales for the axis lock on a drill press is always a PITA. So instead I decided to try modding the existing handle, which took literally 2 minutes on a belt grinder, and (1) it is WAY more comfortable (2) it looks like a shark!
Still gonna make new scales for it eventually, probably burgandy linen micarta with a more mundane shape, but for now this is pretty cool. Before and after pics - Alas my phone camera is terrible, but you get the idea.bm31reg.jpg

One of the nice things about g10 scales (wood, brass, micarta, etc) is that you can customize them to your preference. Good job. The only downside is often it lessens the resale value.

yeah that's why I wanted to try it out on a user & not potentially ruin a new knife.
The difference in comfort now is really susbstantial.
I figured other 531 owners might be interested in seeing how this option worked out
