I'm looking for advice regarding the BM Mini-Griptilian. There is a Cabela's version in D2 for $80 vs. the standard version in 154CM which I've seen on eBay for about $65. Cost is not really a factor, but I'm not sure which steel would be better. This would be an EDC seeing light use. Thanks for any help, Newbie (first post)

Go for the D2. It's kind of rare so when it's gone from the stores it's gone for good. You can always get a regular Grip in 154CM anytime you wish...

D2 will be harder to sharpen, but the edge will last longer. 154cm is an excellent steel, also has better corrosion resistence. Either is fine, I suggest both :)

In either form the 556 is a great little knife. The mini's have full liners compared to their larger brothers like the 551 and Ritters. As a result of their slimness, they're a good fit in the pocket and disappear. And the drop point utility blade provides a lot of edge for the size.

D2's more expensive than 154cm and I wonder if the average person can tell the difference...and it is a little harder to sharpen but gives a nice polished edge in the process.

As has been said you can't go wrong with either.

I'd take the 154CM. BM's D2 is a pain to sharpen and is finicky about care. The 154CM has a nice fine grain for a great edge.

If you don't mind the coated blade then go for the D2 Cabela. You really can't go wrong either way though:D

154CM is hard but doesn't have a great deal of edge stability compared to D2. In addition, the brittleness of D2 makes it better suited to smaller pocketknives like the griptilian.
IMHO, Assuming the added difficulty sharpening is not an issue, D2 would be the better choice, at least in the instance of the knife you're looking at.

If you're going to use it where rust is an issue, I'd recommend 154-CM. If that's not an issue, I'd defiinitely go with the D2. While 154-CM is a very good steel, I don't find that it holds an edge that great, especially compared to D2. My knives in D2 (2 Benchmades) & S30V (Several different knives) seem to hold an edge better than 154CM. I used to have a couple Benchmades in 154CM, but now, only my Emerson CQC7 has it.

As far as getting it sharp, I think 154CM is a little easier than D2.

Please explain the basis of this comment.
