Hello everyone..
My 1st post here. Thanks for all the info you folks have accumulated. I find it valuable and have just scratched the surface of the search tool.
Now I've searched, but I need some current opinions please...
I have a Benchmade 630 (bk) skirmish and a BM 940 sbk Osborne. Didn't really want the 940 with surration, but wanted the bk so that's what they had, may get a satin too (I like to whittle). I'd also like to check out that BM610 , but that's not what this is about.

**So hears the deal...
I have large hands and find the BM 630 managable, even delightful, but tired of peoples reaction so got a BM 940 as an EDC. Nice Knife but does not quite fill my hand. Really wanted the regular blade for the osborne, but local was out and ... what the heck, could be useful as an EDC. But I was thinking maybe a BM 707 (710 would be getting long again). The mini skirmish would be right if not for it's appearance... thumb holes and recurve still scare people that don't love knives.

What the H*ll do I want ?
I'd like an EDC to fit my hand, do a little whittling and strip some wires and not raise blisters, be low profile in the pocket and be an admirable to show, have reasonable SD and survival potential, and not give the cops a heart attack if seen.

The Osborne's bigger brother? ...Proly the 707 ... right? I need about a 5" handle I think, axis or frame lock, show quality, but up to EDC use and the above use.

Any of you familiar with the two I have that can suggest something in the middle? I like the axis lock, but frame is ok, but not liner.

thanks
Mike

Sounds like you need a 710. Axis lock and it has a 3.9" blade, the 710's blade is alot slimmer than the 630 blade, and the handle will fill your hands nicely. I think the 707 is way to small for what you are looking for. Plus if you look hard enough you can get the 710 in either M2HS, D2, ATS-34, or 154CM.

The 707 is smaller than the 940. If you want a 4.5-5" handle and axis lock, you will wind up with something that will scare the sheeple. A full-size griptilian (regular, D2, S30V or M2 Ritter version, take your choice) does not have quite the same "scare" power for its size as the 630 or 635.

If you want something with the blade size of the 707 and a slightly beefier handle, look at the 525 or the HK 14210. Maybe the larger HK 14200 is just what the doctor ordered.

You said you don't really care about liner locks; what about the compression lock? The Paramilitary has a 3.25" blade and a 4.75" handle that feels good in the hand.

The 707 is not for you, much smaller handle than the 940. Same with the 525 or the HK 14210. For an Axis lock with a bigger handle than the 940, but a blade not much bigger, you don't have a lot of choices. Somone already mentioned the HK 14200.

For a knife the same size as the 940, with a handle that may suit you better, look at the 921. The handle is no longer, but it is much differently shaped - I'm not sure it will fill your hand, but it's worth checking out if you can find one to handle.

Two knives around the same blade length as the 940 are the just-discontinued 730 Ares series (730, 732, 733, 735 - all the same size, different handle materials) and the 520 Presidio.

Now what I can't guarantee is they won't fill your pocket, and they won't get you looked at, at least a little. They're both about the same blade length as your 940 - the 940 is 3.40", the 520 is 3.42", the 730 is 3.60". But they both have beefy, spear point-ish drop point blades, as well as nice hand filling grips. And of course, having a bigger handle, which you want, they take up some more of your pocket.

The 710 which someone mentioned is a very nice knife with a sweet 5" handle - but the 4" long recurve blade really is an attention-getter, as you found with your 630. That's the only bad thing I have to say about it though.

If you drop the "be admirable to show" requirement, the other Benchmade you should look at is the Griptilian. The handles are plastic, and it does not look as nice as the top of the line models. But it has an excellently ergonomic (if plastic) handle, and your choice of four blade shapes and three steels, starting at an internet price around $60 plus shipping.

To my mind, based on your post, those are your possibilities - HK 14200/14250, 921 Switchback, 730/732/7355 Ares, 520 Presidio, or Griptilian. Every other axis lock either has a handle significantly smaller than the 940, or a bigger blade than you want.

Which doesn't mean you can't change your mind, but I can only go on what you post. :D

If you are not set on a BM, you should consider a Sypderco Paramilitary. Sounds like pretty much what you are looking for. Compression lock is solid. I don't know that it is totally sheeple friendly, but it is as sheeple friendly as you are going to get for a knife with that size handle.

BM 710 is also right there. If you can find an M2 bladed version, I highly reccomend it.

Thanks all.
I'll look at the paramilitary, looks like the 710 is the one for me in BM.
I had fun with my Osborne 940 today. A quick thrust / swipe at a lunchbag. Everyone said what a waste of money.. then the guy picked up his bag and it fell in half.... sweet :-)
