BM 705-401 vs 707, any opinions?

I'm planning on picking up one of these knives, to be somewhere in between my camillus sizzle and my BM 806d2 (like the pointy blade of both of em, had a rittergrip but thought the blade was too wide), and am trying to figure out which I'd like better, anybody have any thoughts/comments/opinions?

I have the 705. Currently it's my EDC, though I only really use it for mail opening... It always amazes me how much money I spend on a simple letter opener :)

I like the handle cos it's relatively thick, but am not too keen on the "toothpick" blade. Very pointy, and no recurve like it's brother the 710 (which I really like - I just find it a touch large for EDC usage).

Saw a nice article about switching the blades somewhere here in the forums. from the 707 to the 705 - more belly. Voids warrenty of course :D

The 707 has a slightly smaller width handle, made from aluminium and some "grippy" inserts. But I prefer the 705 with the G10 myself. Personal preferencing again. I thought the 705 would be the perfect choice for EDC, but I guess "perfect" is contextual.

I also have a Mni Ritter grip which I really like - due to the wide blade. Wish I'd brought this with me as well. Duh!

Pre-emptive perhaps, but, if you decide to go with the 707 and don't like the blade shape and would prefer the more pointy 705 one, I'd be more than happy to trade you blade for blade. Just a thought ;)

Feel free to mail me about anything related to the 705. I'll try my best to answer your questions.

Regards,

Joe.

Thanks for the reply:).

I guess right now I'm leaning slightly toward the 705-401, just because from what I've experienced with the fullsize rittergrip and my other knives, I seem to like the pointier blades a bit more (although sometime I'd like to try something kind of between the two), and because the limited edition and the nice scales kind of appeal to me (the fact that it costs %30 more is of course a moot point;)).

the handle wouldn't be any thicker then the 806d2 would it? Because I can carry that pretty comfortably (if a tad heavily;)) in the shorts that I tend to wear around most of the time (in the summer anyway:P).

If for some reason I do happen to go with the 707 and decide I want the 705 instead, you're first in line^^.

Never had the opportunity to use/carry/see an 806 yet, though I do have the earlier mini versions ... 812 and 813.

The 806 seems like quite a handful. :D but it always gets a great deal of positiveness here on the forums.

I have alsolutely no problems carrying the 705 on the waistband of my shorts either. In fact I hardly notice it's presence to be honest.

Whichever route you go; 705 or 707 ... I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The fit and finish of my own 705 was terrific.

At some point in time I may even try to fashion my own 'replica' handle scales from a piece of carbon fibre sheet. Gonna try this on my spyderco Chinese folder first though :) That'll be kinda interesting.

The blade on the 705 is .10" compared to the .125" on the 806. That might sound minimal, but on the blade, that's quite a bit of difference. I can't speak for the liners or scales though (until I get my 705 anyway), but they certainly won't be any thicker. I can't speak for the 707 either, except say that the blade thickness is the same as the 705.

I carry an 806D2 as my EDC for work, great knife hands down. I have handled both the 705 and the 707, and decided on the 707 for carrying when I'm not at work. It's slimmer than the 705 due to replacing the G-10 handle scales with aluminum, although the incorporated some G-10 into the design by inlaying it into the aluminum handles. The blade having a little more belly to it is what swayed my decision on the purchase. Not slamming the 705 at all, just not enough blade material for me. Hope this helps some.

Just got my 705. The liners/scales are the same thickness as the 710, so the difference in overall thickness is pretty marginal; just that of the blade.

I'm a bit supprised at just how much smaller the 705 is than the 710. I mean, I knew it was going to be smaller (3" blade/4" handle instead of 4"/5"), but numbers don't mean much until you hold it in your hand.

The silver twill G10 is very cool. The handle is smooth and not textured like the 710. This'll be my new gent's knife.

That's exactly what I thought!!! :o The 710 is 'massive' in comparison really.

IMHO, reading the specs means very little in this particular case. (I now own both)

Unfortunately, for those of us who are not fortunate enough to be able to handle higher end knives before purchasing, we have to go by specs and other peoples impressions. That's what makes these forums such a great (if sometimes confusing) place to gain as much information as we can before making a buy.

Well, for posterity's sake, I received the 705-401 a couple days ago, and am quite happy with it. It is quite small compared to a knife like the 806 or 710, but I was somewhat prepared for that after getting my sizzle a while back, holding it up between two fingers, and thinking "this thing is supposed to be a KNIFE?". It came a bit on the tight side as far as the pivot goes, but two little twists with a torx wrench (as in I twisted until I felt something give a bit, and then stopped asap) and some militec-1 and it has loosened up nicely, to where it swings freely back and forth if I pull the axis back. I do agree that it could use a tad more belly, but unfortunately, I haven't run into much that (legitimately) needed cutting since I got it, so it's mostly been playing with paper and such, so I don't know if I'll actually have any negative feelings regarding that.

The blade when opened seems a bit canted downward compared to the 806 and rittergrip, a couple of times when I was flicking it open and closed, it felt like it wasn't completely open when in fact it was. I personally haven't had any problems with it being too thick, seeing as how it's the thinest knife I own:P, and it's light enough that I've sometimes had to check my pocket manually to make sure it was still there.

So overall, I'm quite happy with it, and think that it will hopefully be just the knife I was looking for:).
