That 710 did need reprofiling. What did you take it down to? Were you able to get a mirror finish on a recurve with the Edgepro?

Looks awesome.

That is...wow, just wow. Nice job! How long did that take J?

Thanks. :D

Took me about 45 mins or so. :)

M390 really isn't too bad to reprofile.

Took it to 15 degrees per side. :D

Yes it's a mirror.

I was interested in your experience with putting mirrored edges on different steels.

I've found that S30V does not benefit all that much from a mirrored edge, but D2 and BG-42 love it.

I did the whole cardboard cutting testing series, all the knives had mirrored edges on them.

S30V works very well with a mirroed edge from my experience with it.

The problem with S30V is that it developed a working edge pretty quick and then holds that edge for a very long time.

Congrats, Ankerson! Hopefully mine will arrive in the next day or so.

Jim, How would you compare it to S30V class ( powder) steels as far as sharpening goes? Does it match with the wear resistance tables which is somewhere above S30V, well below S90V?

I've sharpened 20CV, but didn't really get into reprofiling it like you did.

It, like Elmax seems to like sharper edges than S30V IMO, and holds the high sharpness levels longer than the S30V, which goes right to the vanadium "chainsaw" effect and stays there for a long time.

In fact, I've begun putting a less polished , more biting edge on S30V just out of preference, while still highly polishing M390/20CV, Elmax, and ZDP. ( only 8,000 DMT grit with a diamond strop passes for a high polish here unless special circumstances require higher)

Thanks, Joe

M390 is a dream to sharpen on my Edge Pro, very easy to raise a burr, takes a laser edge. My Edge Pro 120 Silicone Carbide Water Stone ate it alive.

For me it was easier than S30V to reprofile.

M390 is what I call a clean steel like ZDP, I didn't get much of a mess when sharpening like VG-10 and some others.

Going to cut some cardboard on video today and see how the edge holds up then I will add it to my list. :)

Jim, does the edge pro handle recurves easily?

If you are going to be sharpening a lot of then get the 1/2" stones etc.

It did the BM fine with the standard stones.

Just finished my Cardboard cutting video. :)

The 710-1 is a cardboard cutting machine, if you need a cardboard knife this one is it.

M390 did about the same as 20CV as expected, but slightly better IMO, different knives and companies etc.

Video will be up later today.

I have a 710 that I haven't touched in probably 5 years. I need to get that sucker out and slap a shiny on it. Looks great, and I recall the 710 to be a mighty smooth opener.

Oh they are smooth. :D
