BM 710 - Edgepro or Sharpmaker

 I have an Edgepro and a Sharpmaker (had a Lansky too until I threw that thing in the dumpster). Have sharpened a few dozen knives over the past few years, but never a recurve blade. Just got a new BM 710. Should I use my Edgepro or my Sharpmaker to sharpen it? (And yes, I did read the 'How to Make the Benchmade Axis Perform' post, but it doesn't talk about relative merits of Edgepro vs. Sharpmaker). Thanks!!

Since it is a very mild recurve you could probably do it easily on the edgepro, but recurves usually are easier with a hand guided system, ideally you would use a round or at least rounded ceramic steel.

The Sharpmaker will work nicely. Sandpaper wrapped dowels in decreasing grit up to maybe a 2000 will work even better in my opinion. Better still try the 701 profile stones Spyderco offers. They are absolutely great on a recurve.

I use the Edge Pro Apex on my 710 to great effect.

Simply use the flats of the stones on the distal portion of the blade, then the edges of the stones on the proximal portion.

This allows me to put a mirror-edge on the tip, and a toothier edge on the section nearer the scales.

Ideal.

Funny you should ask, I just reprofiled my new 710 with an edge pro. The recurve is not as bad as i thought it would be. The factory edge was pretty thick and an edge pro is a great tool for the job. :D

If only I knew what distal and proximal mean.... Thanks for the replies

Adjective: distal [ dist(u)l ]
1. Situated farthest from point of attachment or origin, as of a limb or bone
2. Directed away from the midline or mesial plane of the body

Adjective: proximal [ proksumul ]
1. Situated nearest to point of attachment or origin "the proximal end of a bone"

EdgePro will work on a 710, I reprofiled a Spec Bump with it and It took some work but even with that recuve the finish was great.
