I got a BM 710 in the D2 Steel for my christmas present. I was just wanting to get any advice on maintenance on the knife and also just get a few opinions on the knife. THanks.

it is a good knife. keep in mind that D2 isn't stainless. you are gonna have to apply rust inhibitors, ie tuf glide or tuf cloth, applying these will help prevent it from rusting. if you haven't owned an axis lock already you are gonna love it!

YEah, this is definately an awesome knife. Heck, I'm already trying to figure out which one i'm going to want next. Thanks for the info on the blade, I will have to look into getting some of that.

I got this same knife a few weeks ago, hasn't left my pocket since. Great slicer. Don't let the non stainless steel worry you, the coating is very tough.

yeah i have a benchmade nitrous stryker. it is also in D2. i got it in a satin finish. in a sense i am disappointed that i did. i never put and rust inhibitor on it. the thumb-ramp has a lot of patina on it. and to me it doesn't look nice. anyway glad you like your knife.

It was the first Axis lock BM did and is an icon in the world of knives. Do a search on this forum for it and you can spend the next few days reading! Use google to search; searchterm'site:bladeforums.com, or bm710'site:bladeforums.com

I've had my 710 D2 for a couple of months now. I wiped the blade down with a little Rem-Oil on a cloth. After a day's use I just wipe it down again - just takes a second but I pay particular attention to get my fingerprints off the thumbstud area and between them and the handle.

I also used my Spyderco Sharpmaker on it and took a pencil underneath to get about a 22 degree angle on with the diamond rods (the corners work well), stropped the daylights out of it, then used the 30 degree setting and put another bevel at the 30 degree setting, then stropped the bejeepers out of it again, Now it has really super sharp edge and you can't see the toothy edge of the blade without a magnifying glass.

Last, I took some 400 grit wet/dry sand paper and took a small piece and taped it to a pencil and rolled that edge of the G-10 over - near the thumbstud for a nice contour and easier access to the stud. Check here at 4 minutes 50 seconds

That's just what I did, it was fine before but super afterwards. I LOVE this knife!

The only issue with the 710 as I see it (not counting the recurve sharpening depending on how you sharpen) is that it's about one of the all around best axis locks they make, for me I never found one that did what the 710 did.

The D2 is pretty near stainless, just keep a little oil on it and keep it wiped off and dry and you'll have no problems.

It's a great knife, use it any enjoy.

ditto to cutter17. this is one of my never sell or trade knives. bought it quite a few yrs. back. great edc but not one to clean deer with.[too much cleanup]

I'm not sure if you are talking about the design of the 710 compared to other AXIS lock knives or the design of the actual AXIS lock. But to me the actual lock on the 710 is the AXIS lock I most dislike. It was the first model the lock came out on and I'm surprised it hasn't been updated. The liners don't have a cutout to slide the lockbar through so the lockbar has to be taken apart if you disassemble the knife (which isn't a big deal because I'm sure this doesn't need to be done much). But the lock also has a short 'throw' so the bar stops moving as soon as it clears the blade tang to unlock it. On some of the other models you can pull the lockbar way past the tang of the knife. Personally this extra 'throw' feels much better when using the knife. The 14205 and Rift have the best feeling lock to me as they have probably twice the 'throw' of the 710.

I know the 710 is probably the most popular Benchmade around here but I guess the thin blade with the slight recurve just doesn't do it for me. I much prefer the 950 Rift followed by the 14205.
