I had a 710 in M2 once before but I sold it. right now I have a 735 in 154cm but it just seems like this steel is high maintinace and it's not holding up. I was considering a 806D2 since I like the hole and the blade style (looks a little wider than 710). What do you guys think?? How does D2 compair to M2??? Thanks for your insight!

I can't help you much with steel comparisons, but I had an Axis AFCK and I traded it with another forumite for a 154CM 710. I am glad that I did so.

To start with, the AFCK was a fine knife but it just wasn't for me.

It didn't carry as well as the 710. Although they have about the same blade length, the AFCK seems much larger in the pocket due to the long, pointed end of the handle. I suppose this is there for jabbing people or things, and it would probably work very well for that purpose, but in my case it just got in the way.

I like the handle on the 710 much better for general use. The AFCK has a very deep choil and a severe drop off at the end of the handle. I found this basicly forced me to use a single grip if I wanted to be comfortable. The 710 is much more utilitarian, just a moderately curved rectangle with some slots for extra grip.

I preferred the blade shape of the 710. Slightly pointier and seems thinner at the tip, with just a hint of a recurve.

My impression is that the AFCK is a dedicated self-defense knife while the 710 is a much better everyday user. I have yet to encounter a knife that is as good of a general use cutter as the 710.

Of course, all of this is highly subjective. Really they are both excellent knives.

Those are all very good points I hadn't considered the handel that much, however I think the handel will work fine for me. although I doubt I will use the butt of the handel to hit anyone ;) I may use it as a hammer once or twice so that would be anoth good reason the 710s be butt would be nice.
Does anyone have any experience with and over hand stab motion with the 806? is it confortable?

The handle on the 806D2 is comfortable in any position. :D

I love my 806D2, but I still want to get a 710. The 806D2 is a little uncomfortable to carry sometimes.

Also, I think M2 is a little better than D2.

Then again tool steels are high-maintenance too since they rust much more easily than ATS-34 and 154CM.

Also, are you sure the 154CM isn't holding up? Maybe you just need to re-align the burrs by running them across a steel a few times.

You can find the whole story on the blade here:

I was trying not to double post ;)

Anyway, I'm not sure what's witht the 735 maybe I'm just being to picky, I just never noticed this on my other knives (maybe I never looked close.

The rusting would not be an issue like I said I had a 710 in M2 before and there was not problem. Even after I removed the B2 with a dremel tool, which restulted in a really crapy looking blade that I eventually replaced.

Also, I think M2 is a little better than D2.

Why?

You probably couldn’t notice any difference in real life performance between these two steels. Probably D2 should be somewhat more rust resistant but this shouldn’t be an issue since both blades are coated.

I would choose taking into consideration mostly handling comfort and security. AFCK handle fits my hand better and securer. I also like opening hole over opening stud.

So the axis AFCK for me, please :)

Opppsss, just forgot to mention that AFCK blade without recurve probably could be easier to sharpen than recurved 710 one.

My current production carry large size folder is the BM Axis AFCK in D2. Time will tell if the D2 was done right. The latest Axis AFCKs to roll off the shipping lines have a 4 position option carry. Tip up or down and either left or right handed. With the Axis lock mechanism and the oval hole opener it is a truly ambidextrious folder. M2 and D2 both being tool steels are quite hard. I' m not sure if one can really find a definitive performance difference in either steels. But D2, depending on BMs source, has a much higher chromium content than M2. It is therefore more "stainless" for those who are concerned with this topic.

I prefer the hole opener. Easier to clean, faster to deploy, and minimizes any potential snagging while in use or being carried in the pocket. The large finger groove allows for quick and non sighted indexing/ orientation of the folder. The relatively longer handle design not only allows for striking but for trapping as well. Most FMA practioners are familiar with these category of techniques. The dropped handle design aligns the blade with respect to the wrist/ forearm for those who require to thrust. It is a natural pointer so to speak. And finally the Bowie clip point blade shape that is rarely seen on many current production folders, makes the AFCK a fine slicer/ slasher, thruster, delicate splinter picker all around knife. :)

Honestly for me, if the AFCK uses a oval thumb hole, there would be no doubt for me that I'll be choosing the 710.

I've owned a couple of AFCK's one in ATS-34 and one in M2, older style, not the axis lock versions they were nice and good blades on them but now have a 710 in M2 and really likin' that one a lot, from the handle shape as mentioned above, allows for more manurerving when you are cutting material and still has a pretty good swell top and bottom for protection.

Nice rugged blade! ;)

Why don't you like the Hole??

The hole is one of the main reasons I like the 806 I guess I'm mostly concered with the D2 Vs. M2. It seems like there are varying opinions on this.

Also what about the blade style? Does the recurve really have any advantage to the bowie clip point? Nakano 2 touched on this any conflicting opinions?

Thanks for takeing the time on this one, too bad the search is still broke :(

I cannot offer any pro's or con's into the M2 or D2 steel debate, but I can tell you that I just bought a 710HS M2 and can honestly say that this is the best production folder I have ever handled. It's so comfortable to carry and fits in my hand like it was made it for. Considering all the extras you get with the 710HS, Axis lock, G10 handle, BT2 coating, and M2 steel at $128 bucks it is a real bargain.
