i got a BM 710 prototype today, blade marked prototype june 1998, and was comparing it to my std production 710.....both are std plain edge blades, no coating...

the handle material certainly looks different, no 'threads' like ya see in std G10,maybe bead blasted G10?? looks almost like micarta, still has the grooves cut on top/bottom of handle like the std 710 though, but handle is not drilled for left hand pocket clip placement, only 1 side, and it is placed little higher than the std - it has the older BM pocket clip, w/the small logo, no the large one like the std 710, and the thumb stud is about 5/16" farther down on the blade than the std model - also instead of the 5 holes drilled in the metal liner to reduce weight of the std 710, it has a large rectangular area cut out, proto seems to be a LITTLE lighter, enuff to feel w/your hand when comparing the 2...

also the std is marked ATS34 on one side, while the prototype is not marked as to steel type.....anyone have any idea what kinda steel it could be?? or what the handle material is??
how many proto's made?? any info??

i know go to the BM forum, just thought i would check here first, most on the BM forum are here too lol

thanks for any/all info, will post a pick later if i can lol

My proto has the Al handles and the thumbstud location is as you described. Also, the design of the studs is identical to the Axis lock button. My newer 710 is the "special" run with Al handles as well. The studs on it are the current version that can be adjusted with torx drivers. Hope this helps. Quantity made ? Sorry, I don't know.

wow, yep, after looking at it a little, i think it has alum handles too!! not slippery at all like most alum though, but looks smooth, if thats possible lol - AND the thumb studs are bigger OD than the std too

i really like it, thought it would be a neat part of BM history to have, wont ever use the thing though, but i have plenty to use for edc, this is my first collector knife - a early fathers day gift from my wife (she's a sweetie, bought a AFCK axis pre prod a few days ago, told her how much i liked the 710, so if she wanted to get me something.....)

and this PM she said, well, so much for suprises, and gave me the 710!!!

made a great day (friday and payday) even better.........

thanks for the info.....
