I am considering the purchase of a Benchmade 710 and have a few questions for those of you that have had some experience with them. How dependable are the springs that operate the Axis lock? Do they fail often? Is it true that if you disassemble the knife your warranty is voided?

Thanks,

John

Hi jvan,

From my experience the Axis lock is rock solid... the springs
are very reliable. Mine has never failed me after 100s of
openings and closings. Even if one spring failed the lock would still work
since it has 2 springs.

According to BM if you disassemble the knife you do void the warranty.

The 710 is an awesome knife. Very well executed.

The 710 is the best all round folder I own. The Axis lock is the strongest on the market. It will serve you well where ever you need to use it.

I havent had my 710 long but ive never heard any complaints from anyone about the spring failing while I have heard people use it as a hard user and love the knife.

Your warrenty will be voided if you open it up. However if the spring does fail, im sure bm would replace it for free, just have to send it in is all=)

I have several Benchmades with the Axis lock, including a 710, and have not had any problems with any of them.

I don't even like the axis lock but I have a 710. Great knife and very light for it's size. I just recently sold 2 of them. I had three that I picked up here and there. Kept one because it carries so well in my back pocket.:)

you wont have any probs with the axis lock, it has 2 omega springs and if only one breaks it will still operate fine, if 2 break ya can still lock it open by hand, i have never heard of 2 breaking FWIW.

as far as a 710 i prefer the 806 myself, but the 710 is "ok" too.

I don't think it's even physically possible for the springs to break or even wear out. and again, in an emergency you still have 2. and BM fixes stuff for free anyway. even if they could break after awhile or where known to, the 710 is such a gosh darn pleasure to use and carry it would be worth it to me to have to send it in once a year to replace springs. But I think thats impossible anyway, but if it where........

No problems with the springs. The AXIS lock is such a great system that even with the possibility of a spring breaking sometime I'd still go with it. After 7 years of owning AXIS locks and flipping them open and closed I've yet to have any problems. They are solid knives. I would imagine if you did have a spring break and you had it fixed, the chances of it happening again would be extremely low, since having a spring break in the first place is a very rare occurance.

I had an omega spring break in my 710HS about 6 months after I got it. I sent it into Benchmade and they fixed it and sent it back within a few weeks.

Breaking a spring is relatively rare. The incident did not alter my opinion that the 710 is one of the best all-around production folders available.

i have heard of 1 omega spring breaking a few times so its not impossible but it is highly unlikely imho that 2 would break, again i havent ever heard of that happening (in a verifiable case, not "well i heard on XYZ")

I have a first-production run 710 which I purchased used a few months back. It still has both its original springs and I can't stop flipping it open and closed.

:)

It still has both its original springs

Not dissin' you at all, but I'm curious - if you're the second owner, how do you know the springs were never replaced? :)

I agree on the springs issue, though - it's not an issue. I bought one of the really early production knives and while it hasn't led a hard life, springs generally either break fairly quickly or they run forever. In general, they don't "wear out." Having two provides redundancy, too, since the knife will lock safely with just one.

The 710 is a great knife. I own 3 of them and have had no problems. Of course, with something like a spring, there's always a possibility of one breaking, but these instances are very rare. Heck, people talk a lot about guns, but they also have small springs inside them, and are more complicated than any Axis lock.
If you get a 710, I think you'll be glad you did.

No, they do not fail often. Mine from my 5 axis have never failed and they are between four and two years old.

Yes it is true, it voids the warranty. I thought Benchmade is pretty clear about this.

I have dissassampled any axis exept my autoaxis and the Groptilian. They are so nicely made, that i can live without warranty.
