I've finally narrowed my decision down to 2 blades: the benchmade 710 and 14205. Which one would you recommend for edc/occasional camping use?

Thanks!

I love my 710, it reminds me of the smaller 940 in that it seems to have a whole lot of blade for how big/heavy it feels.

Your two listed options are pretty different from each other though. Fatter, heavier, and shorter versus longer, skinnier, lighter. Plus quite different blade shapes. Which do you have a preference for?

Have you done the coin flip test?

the thing is that I'm pretty new to knives so I'm not sure exactly what blade shape i would prefer myself. The only knife that i've owned previously was a griptilian (which got lost :( ). The weight and size aren't too much of an issue for me, so I was just wondering which would be a better one overall.

And perhaps the coin flip test would be the way to go if they're quite similar... :)

710 is a classic, dyau. Not to say you're certain to like it, but chances are you will. If not, there will always be someone to take a classic out of your hand!

Remember, it's not the flip of the coin that makes the test work; it's all in your reaction. If you're at a toss-up and can't decide something, you flip and if the results are okay with you, go with it. If the results of the flip make you want to flip again, then go with the option that lost the flip.

Thanks for the advice! But I'm still really torn between them, they both seem like great knives.

Depends on what type of tasks you are doing during camping. For food prep the 710 does well with the long blade. I would not use either for anything hard like firewood prep. That is best left to a fixed blade.

I like the 14205 myself, mostly because of the blade shape. One of my favorites is the Benchmade 913 Stryker and it is similar to the 14205. I'm sure that the 710 is great but I have a mental block against recurve edges. Also unless you already have the 14205, they can be a little hard to find.

I think either one would work fine for camping. I've done a lot of camping and normally used a smaller knife than either of these but I wasn't doing bushcraft with my knives. If you anticipate something that requires heavier cutting then I would think more in terms of a ZT 0200 or Benchmade 275 Adamas, or a medium sized fixed blade like a Becker 16.
