BM 710 vs. SOG Night Vision

Allright, I can't make up my mind between the two. I've read the reviews on each using the search tool. Both seem to have a good following with the BM 710 having more of a track record and following. I have two SOG knives already, a Pe II and Flash II, so it makes sense to get something different, but the Vision series seems really nice.

The Vision is the knife that proved to me that SOG could put together a solid high-end sport/utility folder, production-quality-wise. If only they had a stronger design team! For me, Vision vs 710 is made easier due to the blade shapes. I"ll present this as objectively as I can: goofy uber-tactical-poseur looking tanto, or incredibly useful drop-point recurve?

Hmmm, my objectivity has definitely gone downhill :) I am kidding about the tanto description, but I am serious that the blade shape difference might help you make your decision.

I can't find the SOG Night Vision, is that a typo? I just find the Vision and an XRAY Vision. I haven't had the chance to handle one, but I doubt I ever would since the blade shape turns me off so much I wouldn't even consider picking one up. :)

I EDC'd a BM710 for over 4 years. Never had any problems and it's a great knife. I is currently out of my EDC rotation at the moment, mainly because I'm trying to go with something less tactical looking. I have the BM710HSSR which has a black blade, black G-10 scales, and a partially serrated blade, so it looks pretty scary to sheeple. It's a hell of a solid knife though and the M2 steel in the 710HS and HSSR takes a wicked edge and holds it very well.

I've owned both. I don't own the Vision anymore, and that pretty much sums it up. Go for the 710.

And not without cause I suppose.

What do You want to do with it?

If You need a knife, which You can use every day to cut easy different things, take a 710.

If something other - Night Vision is made for You ;)

Joe Talmadge has very good pointed the difference between them.

I would definately go with the 710! I have never been that impressed with SOG and even if you want a really tactical knife in my experience/opinion the only thing thats is really "tactical" about SOG is thier looks.

That pretty much sums it up. I want a general purpose knife. I think the 710 is the way to go, not to take anything away from the SOG. Like I said, I have two SOGs already, one was given to me as a gift and started me on the road to knife acquiring. I'm due for a Benchmade.

Thanks Joe and everyone else.

The Night Vision has the G-10 handles but has been discontinued. That's why its not in their catalog. You can still find them though. I wanted to see if I should grab one while I still can, but I'm leaning towards the 710.

I know I'm chiming in late, but I'd like to cast one more vote for the 710. It's a much more useful blade profile (Tantos have their uses, but fall short quite often when it comes down to slicing in some instances. They have strong tips, sure, but they don't have any belly, which I think is necessary).
The axis lock is really awesome, too. Super smooth, incredibly strong and reliable, and fun to use.

Peace.

I am totally biased, only own the 710 out of the two knives chosen.

Mine is worn with pride, of a well made folder.

Imho, everyone should have atleast one in thier collection. :D

Well I added the BM 710SBT to my collection and am very impressed. I like the Axis lock, which is similar to my SOG Pentagon II in operation. This doesn't mean I won't pick up the SOG NV eventually, but I'd like to explore other lines as well. I'm going to alternate uisng the 710 and my Flash II as my EDC. This is addicting.

Thanks guys.

Your damned right it is :D

We knew you'd come around an see the light in getting both eventually, wtg man.

Oh, and enjoy your new cutting machine. :)

Hehe. I would not say it this way - axis was the first one and some parts and ideas of an arc lock are licensed by Benchmade, AFAIK ;)
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Otherwise - congratulations on Your right decision

Go ahead and lean 'till you fall over...Then pick yourself off of the floor and get yourself a BM 710.:D.

I did, I did! Love it. It seems a notch ot two up in quality, but it also costs more. You get what you pay for.

I didn't want to lean all the way until I fell on my sword, I mean knife.
