Hey,

i have decided to get a Benchmade 710, but am not sure which steel. I know the m2 is a tool steel and is harder, but does this make it more brittle and harder to sharpen?

I already have a couple of knives with 154 and am very happy with the steel and am not sure about the added corrosionability of m2. i am sure m2 is also more difficult to sharpen.

any input on the knife and these steels would be appreciated.

thanks

Lee

I've got one of each. I like the 710 design as it is very utalitarian (good grip, good slicer, good lock, good etc.). Its a knife classic.

I find that I can get a better edge on the M2 easier than on the 154CM. It doesn't create as much of a burr (and don't get me started on S30V). That's the reason I like M2 more than 154CM.

As I only recently (a few weeks ago) aquired the 154CM version, I haven't used it enough to form an opinion on whether the couple of points in hardness matters significantly. I can say that in comparison to some other knives I have owned made of 154CM, the Benchmade blade is proving to be easier to sharpen and hold an edge longer. Heat treat and metel batch probably responsible for this.

M2 is not stainless, so it corrodes easier than 154CM, therefore the coating. I like black blades myself (not a Mall Ninja me, I'm a Cutlery Commando).

I've both and use both as EDC for about a year each. The 154CM is a fine steel for EDC, easy to sharpen, no rust (at least on mine), and no problems with any task I used it for.

I got the M2 version just to try it out and found it was a bit of an improvement (IMHO) over the 154CM. The edge lasted longer and sharpening was the same as with 154CM (used a Shaprmaker). Rust was no problem (I looked along the sharp edge for any). No chipping or brittleness was noted in use.

Both knives were used on everything from opening letters to food prep to hiking excursions.

Personally, I liked and preferred the M2 version.

Either blade steel would be great for general EDC. If you're happy with 154CM (one of my faves), I'd stick with the 154CM version simply because it's a bit cheaper than the M2 and widely available. If you'd like to expand your steel knowledge and see how the steel handles, get the M2. Either way, you couldn't lose.

Hope this helps.

What they all said.
Plus, grab an M2 version before thier gone.

Then order the other one.:D

Is BM stopping production on the 710 M2 or something?

This appears to be the case.

From what i have heard an read, that the M2 version is being D/C'd.

They do seem to be disappearing from online sights that did have some in stock, people that ordered from some of these have been told that the M2 model is no longer being made.

Although, on the BM sight, it hasn't been updated to reflect this yet.

I've no word back on the 710HSSR I ordered yesterday, just an order confirmation, so I'm hoping that it's in stock.

EDIT: I spoke too soon, I guess I should have checked my email just before I said that, they are out of stock, and every other place I looekd was also out of stock, that's a real bummer. Looks like I'm going to be going with the 154CM, which I hope is just as good.
