Bm 710's blade hit the inside?

Does my BM 710's blade hit the inside of the knife? It seems like when i close it, the blade hits the inside. How can I find out if it does? If it doesn't, then how does it close without the blade hitting the inside? I don't know how knives close, but I'd think if you close it and the blade hits it then it would eventually become dull. Can someone please describe how the closing mechanism works without the blade hitting the inside?

New to the whole knife thing, just got my first 710 a day ago!
Thanks guys.

The couple knives I have seen that the blade hits the knife handle there is a small flat spot where the edge has been dulled/ folded over. If you hold the blade in the light and get it to glint off the very edge and slightly move it so that the light glints off the entire blade length you should be able to see an imperfection by a change in light. You should be able to look inside the handle and see a line that is cut into the back spacer if it does hit.

The blade tang hits the AXIS lock bar when it is closed and is supposed to keep the blade from hitting anything. What makes you think it is hitting the handle?

I see marks on the inside of the blade, little scrapes kind of.

What do you mean the inside of the blade? If it was hitting something it would be the very very edge would have a spot on it, not on the side of the blade.

Sounds like a liner scuff to me. Is the blade centered when closed?

My Benchmade 14205's blade hit the back spacer as well. I could tell because

1) When I slammed the blade shut by pulling on the axis lock and flicking my wrist downward the blade would bounce back out

2) I noticed a half circle dent in the blade :-/

You can either send it in to Benchmade . . . or do what I did and take an EZ Lap diamond sharpener and file down the inside of the spacer until the blade no longer hits it. I am far too impatient to wait for Benchmade to fix what shouldn't have been broken in the first place.

I have read on these forums that a number of Benchmades have this same problem :-/

I just tried slamming it while holding the axis lock and it did bounce back out. If I sent it back, how long will it be until I get it back? I will send it for a sharpening and send it for sharpening.

I noticed that after I typed it. Thanks.

Also, do I just leave a note saying to check the blade hitting the inside? How would I describe it?

You can print off a warranty form from Benchmade site, fill it out with a description of the problem. This way there’s no confusion on benchmade end.

Just because the blade bounces back open doesn't mean it is hitting the inside. The blade has to hit something when closed to keep the blade from hitting the handle. On an AXIS knife this is the lock bar and blade tang and it will cause the blade to bounce back open just like anything else that is knocked into something and bounces back.

Unless there is a flat spot on the very edge, not the side, then the blade is not hitting the back spacer. Of course it is up to you if you want to be without your knife for 3 weeks and pay the money for shipping and whatever Benchmade requires.

You could try cutting a thin piece of paper and putting it in the knife so that it lays along the back spacer. Then flick the knife closed a few times and maybe push on the blade when it is closed and then pull the paper out and see if it looks like there is a cut or indentation on it. Are you thinking it hits because there is a scuff on the side of the blade?

It cut it in half :(. I'm almost positive it is hitting it. Yes, mainly because scuffs on the INSIDE of the knife (only visible with flashlight)

One of my 710's has this problem too. There is a nice divot that runs half the length of the back spacer. I does not seem to be hurting the blade but I have also thought about sending it in.

I'm sending it in and getting a nice sharpen. 3 weeks of pain coming up :(:(

Your other option is to sharpen the blade until it doesn't touch the back spacer anymore. But I'm sure Benchmade will do that anyway. I've heard horror stories about BM sending blades back 1/4" shorter after sharpening them.
