BM 741 vs BM 630

So I'm thinking about a gift to someone really special to me. I was thinking of a strong and striking looking folding knife with its primary role as a defensive weapon if necessary. In overall ergonomics, looks, quality, fit and finish, and strength which folder would be better suited to this task and which one in your opinion looks better? Their both large sized folders, I think the Skirmish has better tip strength and it is S30V vs 154CM, and the frame lock is probably stronger than the Axis. The 741 has some great looks with polished G10 handles, a full flat grind and a very pronounced upper swedge leading to a delicate but sharp tip.

Which one would you pick?

Also if you think there is another knife out there with better overall package for what I want, don't be afraid to tell me. No SNG's or Sebenzas, I'd like this to be around $200.

The thing with the Skirmish is that you won't really want to use it now because it's become such a collector's item.

I'd get the Skirmish anyway and tell the recipient a little bit about it.

It's only been a year after discontinuation how is it such a collectors item then? It can't be that rare being basically a middle class sebenza for half the price.

741 would be detter IMO for that use; just don't plan on "between the ribs" levering and such.

Personally, I'd suggest looking for one of the 800-806 models (800, 803, 804, 805, 806).

I don't own a Skirmish (still looking) but I've handled one quite a bit. I do own an Onslaught.
The Onslaught is almost delicate compared to the Skirmish or for example the Rukus, but for SD this is not an issue. The Onslaught is light and fast for such a large blade, it deploys superfast and has a great handle. It's also an excellent slicer.
This summer, when it's hotter than I can ever remember it being and I walk around in shorts and sandals, the Onslaught is the folder I carry on my waistband. No other folder I have has its weight-to-dimensions ratio.
It's well made and looks very cool too. ;)

I own both and they are different. The 741 is large but it has a delicate tip. It is razor sharp and can stay that way.

The 630 is a beast but good luck finding one for under $250 NIB. The blade is a recurve as well so it might be an issue with sharpening for some people.

I would go with the 741. Unless he is going to really abuse it, it will last a lifetime. Mine is smooth, carries nice, and did I mention it gets laser beam sharp. I really love my 630 and would suggest it to anyone but with your situation I would gift the 741. Maybe get a 630 and keep it for yourself?

If you can find a skirmish for $200 get it. The 630 is becoming rare and it is second to none in my opinion.
