Yesterday I received a BM 760 M4 Lum on a trade. I'm excited to try out M4 &, of course, love that it's a lg. Ti frame-lock. The tanto blade is more Japanese in shape in that it's more curved, which I think will be more useful.

However, my 760 does not seem to have a detent. I don't know if this is a problem or the way it was designed/made. Does anyone have one of these & does it have a detent? I slowly opened/closed mine & my lock does not move over up opening/closing it.

Thanks in advance.

I've handle one and yes there should be a detent

hey, just curious, is the blade centered on yours?

Is it possible that a detent trench was milled into the pivot area of the blade? Does the blade come open to easily when closed?

Yes, the blade's centered. The knife's nice, but other than the detent, the clip is much lower than I'd like. The Blackwater version (With CM154 steel) has a low-rider clip above the pivot, while the BM version has it below the pivot. I'm not sure why they did that.

Well, I looked at it more closely this time (With a magnifying glass) & there is a detent ball that I can see & the lock does "fall" in slightly, but barely & it does not seem to hold the blade in too well. I can hold the knife with the bladespine downward & a gently motion can bring the blade out. It doesn't come out fully, but it does come out & VERY easily.

Well, maybe I won't flip the clip on it after all, but it does need (Well, I'd like it to, anyways) to sit lower in the pocket.

is it as bad as the dejavoo?

I think it's worse. Part of the trade involved a BM 740. Don't get me wrong, I like the knife, but my initial impression was that it didn't have a detent ball or it wasn't working. Upon a much closer inspection, there is a detent ball & it is working, but not too well. I can see why it is tip-down, just like on the DeJavoos.

the one that I held seem to hold pretty well but that's probably because the side of the blade was scraping against the scale.

I haven't owned a BM liner lock in years. My last one was a mini-AFCK. It had a very weak ball detent.
Of my current knives, my Kershaw Storm has the strongest ball detent.

I started this thread to see if a weak detent was normal on this knife (At first I didn't realize it had a detent ball).

While I initially thought I'd flip the clip, I'll definitely keep it tip-down, but wouldn't mind tapping new holes & putting a DeJavoo lowriding clip on it.

All in all, the knife is a solid Ti frame-low, the tanto shape is better than most, & I can't wait to really use the M4 blade & see how it performs.

I have several different knives in ZDP-189, S30V, & D2, so it'll be interesting to see how M4 compares to it.

Benchmade put the new clip on the 760 to deal with two issues: One, the earlier clip used on the Blackwater version tended to hang up on pockets as the pivot bolt had a pointed end which prevented slipping the knife completely in the pocket. Two, they lowered the clip and placed it over the lock bar to prevent over-travel of the Ti lock.

I don't like the placement of the new clip either, the knife sits much higher than the earlier BW model, but overall the design is cleaner and closer to the original Lum design.

I have used those steels a lot as well, and I prefer the M4 in my Krein Ultimate Caper to all of them because it holds an edge like ZDP-189 but is a dream to sharpen. It gets really sharp very easy without burring issues. I'm not sure how Benchmade's heat treat compares to what Paul Bos did with my knife, but I'm sure it is very good. The trade off for the ease of sharpening and tremendous sharpness to go with it is the lack of corrosion resistance. Just be sure to wipe down your M4 blades and you will be good, and you will definately enjoy using it.

Well, that makes sense. A friend of mine has the Blackwater version & I like the low-rider clip, but I did notice the frame-lock cutout for overtravel on the BM & that the pivot sticks out quite a bit.

I'll have to carry it today & see how I like it before I send it off. I'm getting a G-10 scale for it (Hopefully digicam). I thought about having the clip flipped, but don't think I'll do that & probably won't put it up higher either, but carrying it today "should" help me decide.

Overall, it carries better than any lg folder I'd had (With 4" blade). It's nearly as light as my lg. Seb, a littler wider, but still, very well done for a knife this size.
