Can anyone tell me how to get the thumb studs off of a Benchmade 771 without damaging them? Thanks.

I don't have a 771, but on my 556, the studs look like they have a torx recess in the middle. Possibly size 6. They are probably both the same size, so you would need two torx sets to be able to torque both studs at the same time. They probably unscrew this way.

The 770 series is quite different. They are male and female studs secured by copious amounts of locktite. This creates problems. You will probably scratch the studs removing them. First, heat them to soften the locktite. Grip BOTH studs with padded pliers and...pray while turning counterclockwise.

For a job like that, you might want the blade in a vise, possibly with the edge taped up and some safety glasses and work gloves, just in case.

Marcangel, thanks for the info. I had surmised they were male and female studs thanks to examination with a magnifier. I hadn't thought of the loctite. I had wanted to get them off so I could sharpen the blade all the way back. With my sharpener, I have to clamp the blade close to the studs to take advantage of the flat that is there. Doing so, the stones will hit the studs towards the tang end of the blade. I guess I will just leave it alone even though it bug the fire out of me not to be able to sharpen the whole blade. It's just too nice a little knife to take a chance on screwing it up.

Thanks again.
