BM 810 Lanyard Without Modifications

I purchased a Benchmade 810 Contego today I decided I'd like to carry it at work. My job consists of assessing timber in northern British Columbia, and as such, the risk of losing a knife in the woods is extremely high. To combat this I tie a small lanyard on each of my knives, which is then looped into a longer lanyard on my work vest. This allows me to prevent knife loss while still having easy access to my knife. Unfortunately, the Contego lacks a lanyard hole. Being wary to modify my knife, I developed this lanyard system:

The lanyard consists of a constrictor knot (http://www.netknots.com/rope_knots/constrictor-knot/) tied around the pocket clip and then a diamond knot (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Tie-the-Lanyard-Knot/) tied at the end of the cord.
Hopefully this helps other BM owners solve the lack of a lanyard hole problem.

That is a great idea to use the constrictor hitch to secure the lanyard to the clip. Definitely on my list of things to try.

Sometimes I like to put a snap hook on the lanyard so I can attach the knife to different things as needed. I have some small SS clips that are pretty nice (google fu McGizmo clips) and some less expensive plastic ITW Nexus snap hooks that work well too.

Another thing you can do is to use some brightly colored para cord for the lanyard. The bright colors will increase the visibility of the knife if you drop it while you are out and about.

Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the idea on the HiViz paracord, I'll have to pick some up. I usually flag my knives with orange, pink, or blue flagging tape (depending on what colour I'm using for work) since it's free for me. Later this week I will post pics on my lanyard setup. I work with gloves on all day so I use my system because I find it easier to undo than a clip with gloves on, but I will definitely have to give those ss clips a try.

Good idea. I have a Contego and love it...the only drawback is that I'm a fan of lanyards and as you correctly note there's not hole for one. I'll give this a show! Thanks for sharing!

I hope it works out for you like it did for me. My only caution is that the constrictor knot (while very easy to tie so this probably won't be an issue, but have to give fair warning) is extremely ineffective if tied improperly. If you are going to be taking your knife in to a high loss-risk area make sure both knots are tied correctly and are pulled reasonably tight.

I've actually got some and forgot about it. I'll definitely be changing it out now, the only problem is that that stuff is absolutely horrid for your knife edge.
