hi, im new to the forums andim probaly about to purchase a BM 905 from the knife exchange forum anf i would like to know what your opinion of this knife is. whats its pros and cons? is there anything out there for the same price (or close to it) that is better? thanks

The 905 in my opinion is probably the best utility EDC (every day carry) that I can think of. I have carried one almost everyday for the last five years and I have absolutely no complaints. I got one when they first cam out I think. The lock-up is still solid and I have put that knife through all kinds of things. The ATS-34 steel takes a great edge and since the tanto design is comprised of straight edges it is a really easy knofe to sharpen especially if your are a beginner at sharpening like I was when I bought it. It stays in my back pocket by my wallet and the only thing that has gone wrong with it is that my 250 lb body kind of crushed the clip after its first year of service so I took it off. I have thought many times lately about buying a new one in the M2 steel but I think I am getting ready to get an AFCK in that. Just look around at several sites to make sure that you are getting a good price(1SKS has it in ATS-34 for 69.99 and 85 for M2) and buy it. Good blade solid handle BM quality its an excellent little knife.
Hope that helps. Welcome again and enjoy:D

thanks, that really helps.....im paying 45 for it :)

yeah, id like to get an afck but its impossible to find one for sale by somebody on here. they get bought the very second they're put up for sale. and the new ones are outta my price range.

You should have checked the exchange forum about 5 hours ago. A brand new AFCK 806 D2 just sold for $95 shipped. Hard to beat that price.

DDDDDOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH Don't tell me that after the fact:o
You are a mean man!!! ;)

"and the new ones are outta my price range."
this never stops me from buying new knives..... Do I have a problem?;)

the 905 is a sweet Benchmade. I gave mine to a friend and then happened up on a KOTM 905 with Carbon Fiber scales new for less than $100. Enjoy - Lee

Hey that was my AFCK :D (luckily it was a spare)

The only thing I would be concerned about for the 905 as an EDC is the fact that it's a Tanto.

I have several Tanto's myself and like the blade style but it's not quite as versatile as a more utility style blade.

The 905 is going to be really hard to beat in that price range though so I won't even try. At that price try it out and see for yourself, if you don't like it you're not out much ;)

Good luck!

okay, i just did a search on tanto blades an read a bit about em. but it didnt help me much. im 18 and work in a meat department. i use my knife(SOG mini autoclip)ALOT. mainly, i use it for cutting open boxes, cutting plastic occasionaly, ect. ive really worn out my SOG (but i have been using it for a couple of years now). and i bought a kershaw blackout a couple of months ago but broke off the tip:rolleyes: so, my question is: will a tanto be suitable for what i need to do or would i be better off with something else?

I bought myself a BM 905 for my 18th birthday and have been carrying it around quite a bit even though I have other knives as well. As a utility folder, it's great. I'll probably won't be carrying mine around as much anymore once I get my Sebenza though.:D

Meh...I had a 905 but I quickly traded it away. It was too small. I got a 910 instead, but I don't carry it much. Its not a bad knife, but I have ones that I like more...

EDIT: BTW, dylan, check your email. ;)

If you open and cut up a lot of boxes than a tanto is very well suited for this task. If you cut a lot of strapping or rope it will do okay. If you are cutting food, fruit etc you will not be impressed.

The down sides to a tanto are that typically the primary cutting edge is flat, the tip is in an awkward position for utility cutting and there is no belly to the blade.

This does not appy to the 905, but many Tanto's also have the chisel grind which is possibly the worst aspect of a traditional tanto where utility cutting is concerned.

thanks guys, you've been a huge help. id like to get a cqc also, lol, but there outta my price range too. im only lookin to spend no more than 75 bucks. and 45 for this 905 seems like a GREAT deal thats worth a shot.

Just a suggestion. If it feels too small in your hands, tie a leather lanyard on it and it'll give you more to hold onto. I just did that last night and it feels even better now.:)

Duh! Just realized I was thinking about the 705! Now that I know what we're talking about, I second the comment that the Tanto blade is not the best for utility tasks (though great for defensive use). I'd recommend a look at the 813 mini-TSEK. Our sponsor has them reasonably priced at $56.99 ...
