I can only buy one this month so I was just wondering which one to buy first. I will only be using it for everyday carry and will not cut anything to major.

Totally different knives. The SERE is a tank, strong and solid, not at all for casual carry. The Benchmade is a light, sleek folder with good steel and a great lock, but tough enough for most jobs.

Go with the SERE. I think this is the best knife of the year. I can't keep it out of my pocket. To my taste, the 940 is ungainly in appearance although I have handled one several times and find it to be extremely light and balanced. The SERE far outweighs it for utility though.

John, I've heard a lot of great things about the SERE but as StJames points out...between the two are WORLDS of differences, uses and styles, almost like asking which is better, an apple or an orange....I had a great love for AlMar knives back when Almar was alive his knives were very well made, but since the take over I hadn't seen anything that struck me as near of quality since then, but again, I've heard that the SERE is a come-back for the company...

As to which one I'd choose, gotta stick with the 940, just one smooth knife and my edge is ground very good. 154cm steel takes a sharp edge.

Hands Down BM-940.If you can find the October knife of the month,it has a nice blue handle.my second favorite is the red handled ones. The axis lock is stronger than a liner lock.great blade steel also.Blade design best for cutting chores and ultra strong tip for stabbing strength.Better price/940 is the winner here.

I'll just say that the 940 was too small for my hands, and I have fairly small hands.
The SERE 2000 fits my hand great, and I just love a spear point blade.

I know Benchmade have a huge following, but the SERE is a great knife. Built as well as anything you will find, it would be my choice of the two.

the sere clearly owns the bm940. comon.. just read any review and youll see.

I'm going to complicate matters by suggesting the original Benchmade 710 Axis in M-2, if John doesn't already have one.

Near 4" blade, Axis lock, G-10 scales with a similar "belly" as the SERE, and M-2 blade.

It's a good compromise between the Axis locked Osborne, and the harder steel bladed Al Mar.

John,

Your question , to me, is like deciding between a German Shepard and a Staffordshire Terrier. One is useful in many areas, the other is meant for only one thing.

Go for the 940!

I like the sere and wouldn't mind owning one but I HAD to have the Osborne Benchmade after I held it in my hand and opened and closed it a couple of times. My wife could see that look in my eye and she slipped back to the store and picked it up for me for christmas! I have fairly large hands and it still fits my hand well. After using it a few times I can say it feels good in the hand after you have been holding it for a while. I used mine to carve the christmas bird and open several presents . I love the green handles and black blade. Get both the sere and BM 940! Or just get the 940 and a hatchet!
