BM AFCK, Al Mar Sere 2k or ??

I'm looking to add another knife to my EDC rotation. When I'm carrying a folder it's usually a Spyderco Lil Temp. For the most part I love the Lil Temp except for it's clip. The knife rides very high in the pocket making access great but it also makes it too high profile for me much of the time. Also, the clip bangs into and cuts up everything around me.

I'd like something with bit longer blade for the next knife. The Al Mar Sere 2k looks great and it's said to ride deep in the pocket for a lower profile carry. But the AXIS lock on the BM AFCK is also intriguing. Anyone want to help direct my money? I'm open to other suggestions if I'm missing an obvious winner.

I'd have to say look at the Benchmade knives,
especially the Osborne model.
the axis lock rules!

If you don't mind tip-down carry, the AFCK can be configured to ride very low in the pocket or waistband, which is where I carry mine at work. It's hardly noticible even in Dockers and a dress belt.

I don't have any of Benchmades axis lock models, but I do have a couple of SERE 2000's. They ride very low in the pocket. The SERE is also very heavy. 6.oz can really pull your pants down.

WWill,

I've got a Benchmade TSEK (very, very similiar to AFCK) and a SERE 2000.

What I have to say about both...

AXIS lock is awesome, but also very easy to "flick" if this is a legal concern, I would take it into consideration. The BMs do ride high in their factory clip position. The black clip is very nice though, and fairly unobtrusive. Also, the BM is a very light knife for its size.

Liner lock on SERE 2000 is as solid a liner lock I've seen. Clip is extremely low ride. Essentially only a clip is showing, as it is attached to the butt of the handle. On the standard model, the clip is a very shiny stainless steel. There is also a blacktical version available for about $15USD more (the entire knife is expoxy coated or whatnot, including clip). The SERE 2000 is a tank of a knife. There is a little stud on the liner lock to prevent accidental openings, but when you want it open, its a slick action.

The AFCK is pretty much a 4" blade.
The SERE 2000 is pretty much a 3.6" blade.

The AFCK is D2 steel.
The SERE 2000 is VG10 steel.

Both are big, kick-ass knives, with excellent fit and finish. Buy whichever one you find aesthetically more pleaseing :D

Regards,

Shaun.

Eh... AXIS AFCK is a darn good design (though I prefer the TSEK AXIS), but it's probably not quite the tight-to-the-pocket low rider you're after right now, so my recommendation would be the SERE.

Both are good selections. The SERE is probably even more "overbuilt" in terms of brute strength. It's designed as a folding survival knife and it more than fills the bill--survival in the field or even the "urban survival" routine.

The clip on the SERE is butt-mounted so it rides extremely low in the pocket--SO low that quick access may be an issue. I would try one out if possible. At any rate, it's a super knife that you will never regret.

Good luck.:)

Tough choice so buy both.

I like my SERE a lot and carry it a few times each week.

For the real hard use stuff I carry my AFCK.

Of all the larger knives in my collection my AFCK sees the most use and if I had to choose between the two that would be the one.

Of course, you can't go wrong with an M2 710 either... ;)

I had a SERE 2000, and I have to recommend it as a heavy duty folder with excellent blade steel. Great blade, overbuilt lock, indestructable handles. My only complaints with the knife really werent complaints, but more preferences. One, the clip on mine was extremely tight and stiff. So much so, it made for almost impossible one hand clipping to my pocket. I literally had to slightly pull the liner open a bit to get in on my pocket. Two, due to the knife riding so low in the pocket(I liked the low carry, by the way), the SERE 2000 is not the fastest knife to deploy.

All in all, I will buy another SERE 2000 someday. I foolishly traded mine to Maurice(who has totally trashed it, by the way). :p :D

Hey Mo, don't you know you are not supposed to use these knives? ;)

I would say the AFCK all the way, I have had an AFCK since they first came out, the liner version, and it never failed, so when the new ones came out with the super dependable axis lock I bought one and have never had any problems with it, the thumb hole the axis lock the d2 how can you miss? I have carried an AFCK in one version or another for probably 7 or 8 years and they have never failed. Just my .02 worth. Jeyr

cpirtle: That is one slick SERE 2000. Is that the auto version? I've never seen one with the light gray scales.

Thanks nerd, that is one of my customized pieces.

I started with a tactical edition SERE and re-did it in Desert G-10 and Black Micarta. Jeweled liners and added thumb ramp checkering..

The AFCK is a great folder. A real classic and with the AXIS lock its an even smoother, stronger, and faster knife to use. Unlike many people I like the black BT coating. I think it looks great with the nice curves of the blade. When a blade is scuffed up its scuffed up whether it has a satin finish or black finish. Its just unavoidable and nothing to cry about with a working knife. Clip can be moved for tip down or tip up (factory setting) and right or left hand. With tip down the clip is fairly high on the handle so it goes pretty deep inside your pocket or waistband. Maybe not as much as the SERE but pretty close.

The SERE is a very well made folder no doubt but the most I want to carry as an EDC is around 4 oz. Anything heavier I'd go with something like a Spyderco Chinook.

With all that said I have to agree with glockman99. I just got a Spyderco Military and its an awesome knife. I like its linerlock, the grind and heft of the blade, and the way it handles. The blade slices and dices better than anything else I have IMO. Take a serious look at the Military. I think its worthy of your consideration.

Of the 2 knives you mentioned, I'd go with the Sere 2K. It's my favorite production folder and I have carried and used a lot of them. My current carry is a Spyderco Military because my wife liked my Sere enough to... ahem, umm, I guess the term would be "permanently borrow" it.

Go with the Sere, you will NOT regret it.
