BM and Gun Scrubber

When looking at a post for cleaning it reminded me of something. When I purchased a BM about a year ago I was cleaning it with gun scrubber which was suggested by there recomendations for care and usage. After one spray down with this solvent it ate away the plastic on this knife. Just thought some of you might like to know this as it seems some of you are gun nuts as well and you might have this solvent around the house. The happy part of this story is that they fixed the knife for me in a timely manner. After Buying a Stryker a couple weeks ago I see they no longer list this method for cleaning. But I figured I'd save anyone the grief just in case.

You probably got an older knife that had been in stock a few years and had an old insert. BM stopped recommeding Gun Scrubber several years ago. Gun Scrubber got reformulated to replace cloroflorocarbons and the new stuff is very aggressive.

Gun Scrubber is, as one might expect from the name, sold as a gun cleaner. But more and more guns have plastic parts too. So, I'd advise great care with Gun Scrubber for knives, guns, and anything else. It is a very aggressive solvent.

I happened to start using it right on the transition. I went through several cans of it with great success. Then, I got a new can and it suddenly attacked the plastic on one of my AFCKs.

It's good to remind people of this, especially those who might be familiar with the older, kinder, gentler Gun Scrubber.

Gollnick,

You mean it ate G10? Yikes!

No. This was the model 875 Setinel whit what I believe is a cheap plastic. Why BM uses this material, I'll never know. This material is used on several of there models including the Stryker. I do know that it's not G-10, I don't have a clue as to what it might do to G-10. I would think nothing. I use this same cleaner on my Glock, with no effects to the polymer. I Would imagine that G-10 is close in tolerances. But I'm just guessing here, I'm sure there is someone out there who knows more about this that I do.

Thanks for the info. Had no idea a speciality knife company like Benchmade would use cheap plastics (possibly the worst material around) in its knives. Reminds me of a story one veteran fireman told me in a fire-safety lecture when he found that the handle of his folding knife had melted and was stuck inside his pocket after a fire.

Gee, and they use cheap steel too. I spilled concentrated hydrofloric acid on mine and it just disolved.

It's not that the plastic is cheap. Plastic does not have to be cheap or flimsey. Plastics come in all grades from what is often used to make the toy in the bottom of your cereal to that which is used for components of the space shuttle. The fact that a strong chemical will attack a given plastic does not make that plastic cheap.

Whew...I've used Gun Scrubber for a while and it's great to really get an Axis Lock clean. I've melted a Kraton handle before, but never had any trouble with G10. I sure wouldn't trust it around Zytel. Been curious as to how well Busse's Resoprene C(?) will hold up, but I'd be shocked if it didn't handle it.

Even on G10, I don't let it sit. Spray it until nothing is coming out of the lock, then immediately under running water.

It does leave a white residue on G10, just like on a Glock, but a quick wipe with a TufCloth takes care of it.

Thanks for posting this! I've got a Mini-AFCK, and I hadn't even thought about the spacer not being G10. I sure hope I remember the next time it needs cleaning!

I don't use Gun Scrubber on any of my knives and guns because of it's aggressive style. The product I now use day in and day out is "Powder Blast" - made from citrus extracts. Very pleasant smelling too.

BM's are currelty my favorite knives when I say thier using a cheap plstic, what I am actually trying to say is that I think there are better materials that they could use. I absolutely love these knive but I feel they cut a few corners by adding a cheaper costing material like this plastic. I'm sure part of it is just the look for me as well. But I feel that this material doesn't belong on such nice knives that use materials like titanium and ATS-34.
After this incident with the gunscrubber, I try to stay away from this material as I worked in maitanance for several years using strong chemicals. I found that I like to get materials that will take a beating. I by no means am insulting BM, I will continue to buy thier products. But I avoid this material in a knife if I feel I will be around strong chemicals that day. That is what's so great about having several knives. Thanks for all the replies as I would hate to see someone damage one of there knives, when it could be prevented.
