BM custom balis

Does anybody have any pics of custom BM balis with any of these characteristics: mariner blade, 3.5" wee-hawk tanto, 3.5" kris, 3.5" bowie, 3.5" scimitar, or 3.5" imada high hollow or any other unique blade? I am not looking to buy but I would like to see them, plus I doubt that people that got custom BM balis requested these kind of blades.

Also, anyone have any pics of a fully serrated bali blade? Is it possible for a bali to have a hawk-bill blade?

Lastly, does any knife w/ a recurved blade have serrations on the recurve?

While I don't have any of the exotic blades, I can say that yes, hawkbill is possible, as is fully serrated. I may make one from old Jag bits and a broken Endura. We'll see. E

Oh yes, several BM's with recurve have serrations (710, for one). There are plenty of others as well.

I don't think there were any 3.5" blades; they were 4", 5", and the super rare 6" in the custom/semi-custon line and 3" in the 30 series of bali's...........Sniperboy's site has a number of pics of different blade styles and links to more.

Did BM just never offer those blades in the 3.5" size for customs?

3.5" was available. A lot of stuff was available that the catalog didn't list. These knives were very much custom.

I have seen a 3.5" Weehawk Tanto. But it'd be hard to make a 3.5" kris.

While you could make a balisong blade with some recurve, the blade for a balisong has to be fairly narrow to fit in the folded handles, so a dramatic recurve really isn't practical.

Would you happen to have any pics Chuck? I have looked at ALL of the pics on Susan's site, Chuck's site, Clay's site, knifezilla.com, Lew's site, balisong fans, and all other sites containing balisongs. Would there have to be a certain amount of undulations on a 3.5" kris? I know the standard is about 13 but a lot of kris blades I've seen don't have that many.

Does anybody have pictures or drawings of all the different blade types that BM offered that you could put up on the net? I do have pics of the blade profiles from Chuck's site and "The Advanced Balisong Manual". Thanks

and I STIL Have a ****load of pics to post for the secretSocietyCollectorsPage.. groan... sorry Couteaux, I will get your swell Miller up asap, apologies to Dawkind too.. ugh those pics RULE. get me a pic of your Bead blast tanto as well.. in order of popularity my statistics show the the most common custom was the weehawk followed by the drop point, bowie, then weehawk tanto and imada high hollow. THe rarest blade shape I have either than the hollow ground clip (pre design to the high hollow) is a scimitar blade.

It also seems that the 3 inch blades are very rare too, like CHuck said it is very custom. I only have held a bead blast weehawk mini and a spearpoint mini.

now the mariner blade.. I hear from Couteux that Jody Samson personally carried one on his body but I have yet to see one in the flesh. or in digital.

A recurve or hawkbill is something I am looking for actually. may have a custom maker make me oene of ever and the design would have to be made so the handles also curved with the blade so when closed the nife woudl look like a banana and open look like an S.. funky huh?

I also have yet to see a custom with serrations.

The only mariner blade I've ever seen (besides drawings) is my Buck cross lock; one blade is a plain drop point and the other is a full serrated mariner blade. Here is a pic that I got from 1sks, it is the exact same as mine, except the black strip in the middle is blue, I bought it for $30 from an acquaintance of mine:

Susan/Chuck: I sincerely hope that you guys/gals put up more pictures of balisongs, especially rare, one-of-a-kind pieces.

BTW, just so you guys know: THE 42 IS FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, well, I have some pictures that aren't posted. But, there are over 380 pictures on my site right now. As time goes by, I'll post more. But, the stuff you're asking for is definitely "vault" material. I've got some more pictures to put in my "Special Exhibits Gallery" But, I'm fussy about the Special Exhibits Gallery. I want only the finest pictures of the finest balisongs for that page and I want them carefully presented. So, it takes a bit more work than just slappin' 'em up to the site.

The shortest Kris that I am aware of is 4".

13 undulations is common for Indonesian kris swords. In Western culture, 13 is seen as an unlucky or even evil number. But, in Indonesian culture, it is seen as a lucky or even magical number. There are many colorful legends and myths about magical kris swords. The number of undulations tells a lot about a given Kris. A friend of mine who is a major collector of and authority on Filipino and especially Indonesian Kris knives and swords showed me one with 22. A blade with 22 was traditionally made to avenge the death of a close relative or friend. But, kris knives and swords really are not my area of expertise. There are many websites and even forums dedicated to these unusual blades and I'd suggest interested persons research those sites for further information.

The common 4-6" balisong form-factor doesn't allow for 13 undulations.

BTW, a very nice custom Bali-Song Kris recently sold for $1500 in a private transaction. A bit low, if you ask me.

I read about that $1500 one when I noticed that you updated your site. By no means do we want you to throw a bali on the carpet and take a picture w/in a couple minutes, (not that using the floor is a bad thing
smile.gif
) we all want you to present them nicely, you've done a great job so far with all of your pictures.

BTW Chuck, is there a way to get a hold of Jody Sampson? I know that he no longer makes balisongs (and from what I can put together he "seperated" from BM, who knows why) but he crafted sooooo many beautiful blades and balisongs that it would be a shame to be able to talk w/ him but never sieze the opportunity.

Lastly, one of the bone inserts on my 7.5" (total length) FHM is coming off, anyone ever experience this??? Thanks

BalisongMan - Jody Sampson does have a website of sorts - he still works in steel down in the hollywood area. I've not tried to contact him, so don't know about that. I'm on a public library computer right now so I don't have my bookmarks handy, but I'll forward you a copy of his URL next week when I get back to my personal machine.

No apologies necessary! Don't forget to credit Chuck for the awesome pics of that Miller! Also the beadblast PC custom when I get 'em to you!

Hey BalisongMan,

Well - in one of my 'bookmark purges' I must have deleted the one to Jody Sampson's website, and I can't remember the name of the armory he works thru. However, here is a site that carries some stuff designed by him, and they will forward any queries you might have to him. I agree w/Sniperboy - he only appears to be interested in working on non-folding things these days....swords specifically. http://www.albionarmorers.com/swordsmain.htm

There's a link to Jody's page in the vault on my site. But, be aware that Mr. Samson is a bit reclusive.
