i am planning on purchasing my first benchmade knife. it will probably be a 710hssr w/g10 handles and m2 blade. is this a good knife? does anybody have a close up pic of the handles? do they look like plastic? how does m2 compare to d2 blades? thanks for all replys

I have a 710

Fits my hands perfectly. Great cutter.

It was also my first Benchmade, I wanted to get one that had G-10 handles, looked good, and had good edge geometry for all around cutting. I had a chance to compare just about every model at my local shop and the 710 won outta all of em. There is also a lot of information on it because it seems to be one of the favorites for people to review

G-10 is a hitech plasic, but very high quality, durability, and grip.

The M2- D2 chemical comparisons are in the FAQ section of the forums.
They are both good tool steels for cutlery, they are not stainless, but they come with a black coating that protechs them from rust (but does scratch)

It is a high quality production knife, with good ergonomics and materials that can be found at a pretty reasonable price. And there is a smaller version availible 705 for people who think it is too big.

Great choice! The 710 series is a real winner. The M2 version is, IMO, the top of the line in the 710 series.

G-10 is a high-tech material consisting of a fiberglass/epoxy resin composite. I read an article somewhere that indicated a 3' square piece of G-10 supported by blocks could sustain the weight of a 180 lb. man (or woman I suppose:rolleyes: ).

Good luck with the knife. Let us know your reactions to it when you get it.:)

I almost forgot: Welcome to the Forums!:D

Try the 710HS without the serrations first, the serrations are hard to resharpen without the proper tools: i.e. Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker. Also rebevel the edge to 15deg. if not used to cut heavy stuffs. Great user knife. The G10 is tough, does not crack or peel in the 3 yrs I have had the knife.
