Pretty well set on one of these two as my next purchase, problem is I cant have both :(
Some reviews dont favor the flat G10 scales of the 14205, others appear indifferent and agree both models are great tools.

Without a local source affording a "feel"I'm stuck with forum feedback to relay real world feedback from actual user/owners

I'm pretty hard on my tools, knives are no different.
I have no experience with the 154CM so durability, edge maintenance etc feedback is also welcomed.

Finally......
Ultra Lock or AXIS,I'm assuming BM AXIS was Copied by CS into the UL ? :jerkit: From a consumers standpoint which is actually superior ?Im considering one of the CS models useing the UL platform.

So far the site seems pretty cool,Thanks in Advance for any and all help sorting this out.

I'm pretty sure that Benchmade has the patent for the AXIS lock and that cold steel is paying them royalties.

I would take the Benchmade over the coldsteel any day as I like a company that actually makes their product and doesnt farm out the manufacturing like cold steel.

As far as the knives I think the size you are looking for should dictate the purchase. The G10 might be a little different between the two but the size is going to be more noticeable.

I have had BM Axis since 98 and so far the experience has all been good. Tried the CS UL and found that the geometry of the lock system leaves a bit more room for improvement that the current Axis. The tolerence of the parts are very critical and BM has the tolerence parts down pat. CS Voyagers is what I would look for in folder from them.

I have always been partial to G10 scales as my BM 710ats has been dropped on asphalt without too much damage, that would have gauged out some aluminum scales( My CRKT Mirage ).

I recently lost my CS Voyager which I carried for 4-5 years, not a bad blade overall(I never broke it)
All my previous BM experience goes back to the early 90's,back then I probably purchased no less then 3-6 BM's every year over a 4-6 year period.AUS8 was the new kid in town on several models and performed well,I gave up my last Emerson back in 99.:grumpy:

Anyway ...... is there really that much difference between the overall dimensions(bulk) between the two BM/HK's ?
I'm liken the thicker blade and overall look of the 14205,but overall EDC comfort may come with the 14210.
Guess I'm pretty well stuck until I can "fingerprint" these models :grumpy:

Feedback on the 154CM ?
Anything contrary to the generic MFG Disclaimers ?
Preferred method for edge retention ?

T/

154CM is supposed to be a good steel its the "direct upgrade" from 440C/AUS8A.

Edge retention: alot of folks around here like the spyderco sharpmaker and the lansky/gatco/edgepro systems...whichever floats your boat. Just do a search for something like "sharpening" or just check the first page of threads in the "toolshed" part of this site, theres about a thousand threads on the topic.

I've handled both of the knives your referencing and they both feel good in the hand, flat scales or not. Get whichever size you think you will like better, personally I like a heftier blade so I prefer the flat scales and larger grip/blade of the 14205. The overall dimensions are different, check BM's website to get the exact dimensions, but both will fit well clipped to a pocket. One thing BM doesn't mention is handle thickness of the 14205, but IIRC they are both about the same thickness, with the 14205 being slightly thicker. If you are really looking for a thick blade, check out the 14255 with the tanto blade, the thickness stays thick way out towards the tip, and if you really wanted to you could soften the angle on the tanto with a litte curve and still have the thick blade. It has the same handles as the 14205.

The 14205 has gotten some good reviews around here (again, try a search). And the 14210 has won over alot of mini-griptilian fans who want G10 scales instead of frn. So if you are familiar with the griptilians these knives are comparably sized with the full size and mini-grips respectively.

hope that helps.

10dash4 ! on all that 411
Anyone from FTW Tx ?
Wondering if that big blade shop is still up on
820N/Quebec St. ? Wonder if they have any of the HK stuff ?

Thanks,

Contacted " The House Of Blades"(FTW) and he is still selling his BMK's @ BMK's MSRP :jerkit:
As per the thread on the BMK Forum review, the issue with the pivot pins has me abit concerned :(

Still no word back on whether they can be swapped out for another fastener and or be modified"counter-sunk"

T/

what did you hear about the pivot pins? can you post a link to that thread? I wouldn't worry too much about it, BM customer service is supposed to be top notch.

I got mine on ebay...stupid cheap. Knife center and knife works both have a few of the models. if you google the knife name and model number it will usually return some stores selling it (and usually the cheapest are closest to the top, because of the way googles search is built).

Here is the thread
http://tinyurl.com/2fy888

My overall opinion isn't near as critical as theirs, but I do see where there is a need for a lower profile fastener.
Why would BMK use a pin configuration that tall and that close to the Axis lock ?Why not use a counter-sunk pin ?
Just visualizing such, one can see a cleaner profile as well as the potential for smoother operation.

Their review wont prevent me from owning a 14205 or the210.
Forward thinking, says find new pins with a lower profile for smoother AXIS Operation and better fit and finish for "this" customer.

Not likely BMK will step up and answer  as they have yet to answer on their "own" forum.

If anyone has a hook-up/reliable contact at BMK and can find a different pin set for this knife,"this consumer" would be most grateful ;)
I would love to see a 14210 with new pins and G10 scales
Care to share (via PM)what eBay seller you purchased from ?,Ive found one source for the 210 @$101.00/under $110 shipped

If its not broke why fix it !! The knife is the best benchmade I have seen for some time. Just the Right size 3.4" blade with g-10 handel. I love my 14205.

First it all depends on how long you want your blade. The 14210 is basically a mini-grip in G-10. It is very smooth and fits in the hands great. The only reason I have not bought one is the fact that it does not have a lanyard hole.

The 14205 as you mentioned is more flat. I personally don't like how it feels in the hand. It does however have a longer blade. When I was looking at one at my local store, the axis bar seemed to stick out pretty far.

My vote goes to the 14210. Its small enough that it will not freak most people out and I love the way it feels in the hands.

Personally I'd go with a Grip or Mini Grip, as I don't feel that G10 scales and an HK stamp are worth $40.

Granted both platforms are great offerings by BMK.
But mass production doesnt allow for pleasing everyone, consumers are well known for "improveing" on original designs regardless of the product.
I like to mod everything in my world,my blades are no different.
Maybe someone will chime in later with something I can use . . . . . . . . .

^^ +1, or else 14210 would be the PERFECT edc for me

I picked up a 14205 recently and noticed that when you flip the blade closed, it collides with on of the spacers in the back, and the blade was being notched, slowly but surely, by this. Have any of you noticed this? It's strange though, as it doesn't sit on the spacer, it just collides with it, then backs off and sits clear. (I hope I'm explaining this OK)... Anyway, I sent it back for an exchange, but I wonder if the first-production run is just a little flaky...

I have a First Production run 14205, and the blade never touches the back spacers when closing.

It's strange... When sitting closed it doesn't touch them, but it seems to collide with one of them, when I flip it closed, then the blade bounces back slightly, and sits away from the spacer.

My 14205S doesn't hit the back spacers, the closest it gets is 2mm to the one closest to the Axis bar.

Also, with regards to the handle being too flat, it's nearly a half inch thick, that fact and the shape of the handle more than compensates for it not having any contour. The only handle I think beats it are the ones on the Rukus series but both of them are a little too big and heavy for my application. The 14205S is my "big" knife, a 940 as my EDC and a 707 for my "gentleman's" knife.

I also don't mind that the pivot screws aren't counter-sunk. It's a big, heavy knife with as thick of a blade as you can get on a < 3.5" folder; it has a rugged image so I think the non-recessed hardware that makes it appear rough around the edges was done so by design in keeping with the theme of the knife. Non-recessed hardware wouldn't go over well on my 707 or 940, but the 14205S pulls it off well.

Just my $0.02, hope this helps.

Regards,

I'm trying to decide between a BM710 and the BM14205. Which rides best when tucked inside the waist-band at 4 O'Clock? Or clipped to the front pocket of the pants?
