The blade isn't very sharp and doesn't respond to the crock sticks.

Can I use a carbide pocket sharpener to make some headway, then go to back to the crock sticks ?

Don't do it. The carbide sharpeners scrape the metal off of the blade. Find a good sharpening system and work at it. D2 can take time to get to a good edge. I prefer a set angle type with diamond stones. There are many good ways to sharpen, try to use the search function or look through older threads. The people here really know what works and what does not.

Thanks, but I am trying to scrape metal off the blade, though, am I not? The ceramic sticks, Lansky Sharpmaker, aren't doing it. The diamond rod I have is free hand, which is NG for me re angle.

It will tear metal off, not remove it smoothly and evenly like you want. Look through the older threads for info. on sharpening D2. I use a Smith Diamond system and have no trouble sharpening D2. Other people have numerous methods that work. It may take time. How long have you used any one method? Are you honing at the right angle? Are you honing evenly and consistently? Technique has a great deal to do with it no matter what type of system you use.
