BM Mini-Barrage 585 Vs. Spyderco Manix2 C101G2

I have both and I find them fighting each other for pocket time a lot. They both have advantages and disadvantages obviously. Between these two, which would you carry? (Unless you hate both of those knives, then it probably doesn't matter).

The Manix2 is newer so it gets a bigger share but the Mini-Barrage is still fighting it's way in there. I know it could be argued that these are slightly different classes of knife but they are both EDC options.

Is there a question or an observation in your post?

Yeah, there's a question right before the question mark.

It is a good problem to have. Both are nice blades. Whenever I have this problem I will make a commitment to carry each for a set period of time (month). This longer timeperiod gives you a better way to evaluate each.
Changing daily is too confusing.

Manix all the way. I'm a died in the wool Spyderco Fanboy, no problem admitting it.

Well, I guess that the answer depends on what you need the knife for on a regular basis.
If you need a tough, heavy, large folder to beat on (and you know that you can't make it look any uglier) and don't care how user-friendly or people-friendly it is or how much pocket-space it consumes or how well it slices, I'd take the Manix.
If you just need a tough folding knife that can handle the beating but prefer superior slicing performance, ease of use/handling, lighter weight, smaller profile, the ability to impress others (or yourself) without intimidating all but the most knife-timid individuals, take the BM 585... but only if it doesn't feel too small in your hands.

For me, EDC knife duties require a tough-built slicer that doesn't take up too much pocket-space and can be deployed in public without turning heads. If I'm out in the woods or if I were a deployed soldier, the Manix might make a good folder. But in the city, I'd find it a liability. My $0.02

I'd carry the Manix. Not a fan of plastic handles, assisted opening, or the axis lock, so the choice is clear for me.

Ok but it was hidden among all the rambling... The manix.

Yeah, I can see how it could be laborious to get through two tiny paragraphs while being able to discern when a question is being asked.

Thanks for the input everyone. My change in needs throughout the day is definitely what makes it harder to choose. At work I will draw stares pulling out my Manix to cut a box open but when I walk to my car at night when I get off it somehow feels better to have the Manix in my pocket (even though I don't really carry a knife for SD, I feel the Manix would step up in this role much much better).

Why not flip the clip on one of them and carry both?

FWIW, my EDC is the Warn version of the Mini Barrage. But there's usually a Mini Grip or Aphid in the other pocket.

I haven't owned the mini barrage, but my manix2 seems to dominate my pocket time most days. You'll find the spring is stiff at first but it breaks in quite nicely.

I don't own any spydercos yet but I love my mini-barrage. It doesn't get much EDC duty, mostly weekends, cause I don't want to junk it up during the week.

I don't have anything against Spyderco, and I like all of the features of the Manix, but I would choose the Benchmade. You obviously like both and the beauty of it is that you can carry both of them- carry one for a few days then switch to the other one for a few days.

After having carried both lately, I will say one of the...I don't know if I'd say features, but advantages of the Mini-Barrage is that it's design looks like it could be some big box store every-day knife at a glance, like from a non-knife carrying person. However up close it is a well made quality knife. It looks more similiar to other knives people carry from, while the Manix2 instantly looks bigger and more unique and immediately draws more attention. Not always good attention.

I carry 4 on me:D. I guess you can carry both, use the one suits best for each situation.

My current EDC. Each blade profile, size, grind turns out to be unique. Carry them all to learn the differences.
Enlan EL01, Navy k631, Enlan EL02, SRM 763

The 763 is for thin slices, backed up with larger EL02. Both shaves easily too, I use them to shave my face as well.

Heavier duty will be Navy k631, this one is new, rebeveled to 30 inclusive, not as thin as previous one (sold that one). Backup is EL01, longer edge and thicker spine, it'll stand up to abuse better. Added bathroom tape to the spine so it catches the pocket & acts as wave without changing the blade spine shape at all. It works quite well, with the heavy blade & liner lock ball detent as only retention, the action is almost 100%.

Comfort in use (grip) : 763 and k631 on par. Followed by EL01. EL02 has problem with the sharp hump between index & middle finger. If this is taken down or rounded up, it might be on par with EL01.

I hope my Manix2 spring will break in soon before I give up on it and just carry my PM2.

Mine seemed to take forever too but after about three weeks of carry it is pretty smooth and easy to operate now (a little more difficult than the Barrage still in my opinion out of sheer bulk in hand of Manix but still much easier than when I first got it).
