Howdy Folks,
I've been a long time reader here on the forums, but a first time poster. I have learned so much since I found this forum but I need your help on my next purchase. I'm looking at the BM mini grip and the protech runt.

I've been looking at the mini grip for a while now but I've been putting it off. There's just too many knives out there, I'm sure you all know how that is. Anyways, I don't yet own a BM, but I've handled a mini grip and I really like it.

I recently started looking at the protech runt. I had a 2" AO winchester a while back and I found it really convinent for small tasks. I ended up giving it to my girlfriend but the runt looks like it would be a good replacement. Anyone have any experience with the Runt? What about protech in general? I haven't heard much about this company and I'm having trouble finding information on the knife.

Protech makes good knives, I had a small AO runt and the spring is very hard, the knife almost jumps out of your hand when you open it.
So it's a fast opener but you have to be sure that you hold it tightly.

Thanks for the info. How's the lockup? I'm looking at the auto but it costs more than a mini grip and I don't know if it'd be worth it.

Neither knife will break the bank so go with your gut for now and you can always sell/trade if you aren't happy. I've had a runt and while it was a well made, sturdy and fun little knife the thrill wore off just like the other autos/OTFs I have owned. Like said, the smallness/spring power will make it jump! I still own a couple autos because they are fun and a good conversation pieces with certain types of folks. I've also owned mini- grips and if I had to choose one while leaving the house knowing it might get serious use it would be the mini-grip with no doubt. Also like many others I have learned that autos aren't necessarily quicker to deploy either. ;)

I've never used or seen a runt, but I like my mini-grip.

My only complaint about it, is that it didn't come too sharp from the factory (always a bummer) and that it doesn't seem to slice as well as some other knives I own.

Benchmade customer service is however IMO unmatched, and it is a fantastic EDC knife.

edit:

Not to thread jack in any way but I find this text here interesting:

"The Runt J4 has an 154-CM 1 7/8" California legal blade (black, plain)."

I wonder why they say California legal? Some new under 2 inch law? Either way, looks like a nice knife.

Yup, in California, you can own and carry a 2" switchblade. Some cool loophole. All Protech's knives are top-notch, and you'd be buying a great little product. I've owned a Runt for about 10 years, and it's a fun little toy. I prefer the Stinger (do they still make that?), as the grind on my Runt is a little thick behind the edge.

The Runts are cool, but the coolness factor for the auto mechanism wears out faster for me than the Axis lock.

The under 2" switchblade law isn't new. There's an entire sub-market of CA legal switchblades (not so much with balisongs, although they do exist).

Runt vs Grip is kind of an apples/oranges comparison. Or grapefruit/raisin.

The CA legal Protechs have a wicked snap to them. Like others have said, you gotta hold onto them tight or they'll fly out of your hand. They're cool as hell, but for practical usage, the Minigrip is definitely the more usable knife.
