I think I'm ready to purchase my first ever Benchmade product and have narrowed it down to a Griptilian or the mini Rukus. I really like the mini Ruk; great handle colors, blade shape, S30V steel, etc.. However it's about double the price of a Griptilian.

Just wondering if anybody had used both of these knives and could offer an opinion about which one is the best value for the money. It would get used for cutting cardboard, paper and things at work, but also take the occasional beating out in the woods. In other words, it needs to be tough enough not to fail even if slightly (or moderately) abused. :D

Is the mini Rukus more solidly built? Seems like the G10/Micarta scales would be tougher than what's on the Griptilian. TIA for any help!

Within the typical window of use, I don't think one will be found tougher than the other. If dropped off a two or three story building onto concrete, the Rukus might have the survival edge due to it's non-plastic handle. But then again, it's extra weight might might compromise this advantage since there will be more shock when it hits. I guess if you want to get technical about it, the MR will carry the advantage in toughness but, whether or not you would ever realize it is another question.

The MR is a larger knife - this might be an advantage when camping or, in the woods. I find that larger knives are often easier to use even for small and/or simple cutting tasks. This is mostly personal preference though. Around the office, the MR might be at a disadvantage to carry due to its estra length and weight over the Grip. Given it's moderate size, the standard size Grip is amazingly pocket friendly due to its multiway clip, radiused ends and relatively light weight.

You can't go wrong on either choice. On a purely value basis and without consideration of intended use, I would have a hard time not calling the Grip the better value. And frankly, due to its low cost I would have a hard time not owning one, even though I might also own the MR.

Get the knife that speaks to you the loudest. Cost should be considered but, with a low priority. Neither one are what I would call "expensive". There will always be time later to add other knives to your collection. Never think that if you get one the opportunity to get another will be lost.

I would be interested in hearing more opinions on this matter. After picking up a 710 and falling in love with it, I ordered a 551 grip just to have a slightly smaller axis lock knife.

Honestly, I don't like the grip at all. The plastic handle is really cheap and too light for my taste (I like a knife to feel solid in the hand). I also had to sand down the diamond grip pattern carved in the sides because mine were REALLY rough and sharp. Same thing for the ridges along the spine. I've toyed with the idea of getting a Mini Rukus but I'm sort of concerned after the grip disappointment. (no complaints about the blade - it's just the grip handle that ruins it for me.)

I know a lot of people absolutely love the grip and swear by it, so when I received it I was really confused. :thumbdn:

kinda curious to see how someone who owns both would compare them.

I own a Mini Rukus and used to own a Griptilian. I like the MR's looks, feel, handle, and blade over the Grip's. Just remember that the MR weighs a hefty 5.9 ounces to the Grip's 3.25 ounces.
