Hi all, new to this world, usually hanging out at Candle Power Forums, need some help from you experts. Knives seem like such a natural progression from lights. I'm looking to make a choice on my first EDC, I like both the Benchmade mini skirmish and 707, please help me make a choice, I haven't been tactile with either so I don't know which style of lock is better for single handed operations. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

thanks Paul

Hi Pcaf, I have both of these, and I carry my mini-skirmish WAY more. in fact I haven't carried my 707 since I got the 635. BUT, everyone's going to suggest an Axis for your first Benchmade so I'll step outta the way................. :D Z

The 707 is smaller than you'd expect, and the 635 is larger than you would expect.

If you want a small knife that will be able to be put to hard use if necessary, the 707 is perfect, if you want a medium knife that still manages to look classy, then go with the 635. They're both great from what I've played with them.

I personally wouldn't carry tip-up, but that's just me. The idea of slicing my hand open while reaching into my pocket is not appealing, no matter how unlikely. I also don't hang around in open fields during lightning storms. Just me though.

I am knuts over my Mini-Skirmish. Frame lock - less moving parts than Axis.
Or buy both if the budget permits and switch off your EDC. I now rotate my BM910, BM635 and Leek depending on the circumstances of the day.

I've carried tip-up for years, never had a knife open in my pocket, but who knows.

the 707 is a knife that wont scare people but has a great blade,,the mini is a bit harder to carry

Mini skirmish is better value IMHO

Also you can consider Benchmade 960 - it has very similar price to Mini Skirmish and it is axis lock.

Thanks for all your input, I am leaning more in the direction of the 635, although the 707D2-600 with the wood inlays still has my attention, but the thought of what the black ano. (clip) will look like after some use takes me again back to the 635!

Decision made, thanks Paul

Speaking of clips, the Skirmish line has been saddled with what many believe to be a bad example of a pocket clip.

Just doesn't work well for some.

Another consideration.

The pocket clip on the both Skirmish model is not as fancy as people wanted it to be, this is the problem I think. It's really quite plain looking considering what knife it's on.

But I have learned to like it. It works as a pocket clip and most importantly when your using the knife the clip doesn't get in the way of gripping the knife securely. It's actually comfortable to grip.

There are Benchmade's that have nicer or fancy looking pocket clips that I find completely get in the way of using the knife. So beware, handle before buying or look for a return policy if buying from a website.

Plus if your looking for a very durable knife with a great blade, Skirmish is one of them to be looked at!

I think the primary complaint of the clip on the 635 was that it doesn't function as a lockbar stabilizer...meaning that you could hypothetically bend it well past the edge when unlocking it. I don't imagine this would be any sort of problem to worry about in reality though.

maybe a d-2 cabellas mini grip-i liked it better than the mini skirmish and the shirmish was no slouch

Actually the clip complaint had more to due with function. It has a relatively large radius, resulting in some difficulty in clipping it on and then it slides around a bit as it doesn't grip well.

It doesn't bother me too much as I carry IWB, but it was a mentioned attribute for those that clipped onto/into pockets.

It looks fine, intregal with the overall design IMO.
