Hi I have two bench made model #30 buttefly knives. and I would like to find out why one of the knives has the butterly logo on one side and on the other side, it has the bench made & USA stamped on it. The second knife has the butterfly logo on one side and on the other side, it just has made in USA, no bench made stam on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm not totally sure, but I think it has to do with the date it was made. Another possibility is the location it was made, because Benchamde has moved a couple of times. I have a BM 35 that has the logo on one side and Made in the USA on the other. My 45 and 48 both have the logo on one side and Benchmade on the other.

I think mikem is right. the non BM logo on the one Bali i believe would mean that it was prior to the Benchmade company name say a Pacific cutlery or just the Balisong USA. The model was the same i believe just the company name changed. Someone please correct me if i am wrong. Take care.....RDT

Generally, a non Benchmade stamped model were made during the PC to BM transition days. Most of the definitely PC made ones will have the PC and Patent Marking stamps on them, and those made for BM will have the BM logo's on them.

OK, revealing ignorance is not nearly as bad as revealing stupidity. I have a few older BM / PC balis. The non-Benchmade marked ones all have patent info on the reverse side, while the obverse side has the old "Bali-song" logo. There are no "PC" marks on any of my bali's which include models: 10, 30, 69 and 404 --- all were obtained in the beleif they were PC made. I am not disputing the word of the sellers, just looking for more input. None of my meagre collection of "oldies" has a "PC" marking. I have a few fixed blades with PC identifiers, but no Bali's. Is this common ??? Somebody should help BM create a museum / library of this data before it's lost forever. I have a BM-300 Monarch Liner-lock folder that finally was identified by Les -- nobody else knew what it was. There's a danger that a lot of data will be lost. It's our loss !!

Ouch: You have no idea how long I've been searching for that same fountain of information. But first let me rephrase my original statement. PC made production bali's will most usually have the Pat. Pend. info stamped on the tang with the Butterfly log on the reverse. I believe there was a legal issue with the Patents once PC went belly up, but I never got confirmation from Reberta or Les (and at the time, it would have been too sensitive a topic to bring up.) The PC part were usually etched on the blade, typically on the blade (as in the International Series).... I have only seen a few stamped with Pacific Cutlery, and now I'm not sure if they were on the customs or production balis'....

Sorry about the confusion. I posted a similar question a while back, and got noe response. But I blame myself for limiting the topic to custom BM balis. But if you like, I'm sure we, as a group, should be able to come up with a concensus for the FAQ....

Tony and all, being an "engineering type" this sort of info is of interest to me. I enjoy tracking product development and changes -- weird, I know !! :)
As I posted previously, all of my non-Benchmade balis have the butterfly logo on the obverse side, the reverse is marked US PAT NO over 4,364,174 over MADE IN USA. I'm assuming that any marked PAT PEND are earlier production knives. I have a 68 and 140 Int'l inbound that I'll check when they arrive. Thanks for any help, guys.

Pete, only knife I have with "Pacific Cutlery" stamped on it is a "Laredo" series lock back folder. These came in four sizes. Solid rosewood scales and a 440C blade. Still us it . They were pretty decent knives and were made in Tiwan.
I have asked BM a couple of times about an official history from the begining. So far, no response.

At one time I had 28 400 series knives in stock. Can not remember if any of them were stamped PC. This was around 1983 or 84.

My remaining BM Custom has the butterfly etched on one side and Balisong USA etched on the other. Got this one in 1993 or 94. No Benchmade anywhere on it.
