BM Nimravus or KaBar Impact?

Which would you choose for a fixed blade EDC. There are times like when I am at my cottage that I lean towards a fixed blade and am looking for a sturdy high quality cutter. I do not need something the size of a SRK or a Busse. Anyone have any experience with either the Nimravus or the Impact?

I have the BM Nimravus and like it quite well for a production knife .....Although I haven't handled the Impact I don't think you can go wrong with the BM for the money.:D

Andrew,
This depends on intended use and required result. KA-BAR Impact has pretty thick edge and massive, well steel-supported point. I have stabbed mine into pine board and then pulled sideways digging the wood – no damage for the point. BM Nimravus point more than likely wouldn’t hold up on such barbarian treating.
Nimravus has also thinner edge and is better cutter.

Please take a look also onto GERBER Yari. It has even thinner edge and finer point so it is even better cutter than Nimravus but worse prybar. More attractively priced too.

Putting them into order after handling comfort I would mention Yari – first, Nimravus – second, Impact – just third.

And what about Fallkniven F1?

Serg-you beat me to it. I think the Yari is the best knife, but the Nimravus has the better sheath.

The knife would be a general workhorse knife. Michigan doesn't allow fixed blade carry unless hunting but I already have a nice skinning blade anyway. So this would be a general duty blade and could be called on to do many various things. It would probably also see light duty during camping and fishing trips. I don't see a whole lot of prying but who knows. One major point is for it to go unnoticed on my belt until I need it. So an excellent sheath and light weight are a major requirements.
I am also considering the TOPS Sea Wolfe or Night Chaser.

For some reason I do not like Fallkniven knives. I think it is a looks thing but they just don't appeal to me.

Andrew,
For some reason I do not like Fallkniven knives. I think it is a looks thing but they just don't appeal to me.
Hmm, perhaps these should be very specific reasons... From my side I could reassume Fallkniven knives quite shortly – nothing cool but all very useful. No suggestion, just advice – try to handle F1 before final decision. It contains cutter and pryber properties in pretty sensible proportion...

Unnoticeable on your belt – you say? Thus maybe SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight? The best cutter, the worst prybar, very good factory sheath, really featherweight... Or maybe their Fred Perrin if somewhat longer blade is required? Also far better cutter than prybar, very secure to handle, easy to carry, lightweight...

Fudo,
I think the Yari is the best knife, but the Nimravus has the better sheath.
IMO both sheaths should be better, no special difference. Maybe this new for Nimravus what is catalogued for this year would be better... Did someone see it in person? I’ll try to play with it and make my opinion next weekend at IWA’2003 (March 14-17, Nuremberg, Germany).

Drew66, hey a fellow Michigander! I haven't handled either knife, but I have been looking at the Nimravus also. These two knives seem to be somewhat opposites from details Ihave seen, what steel are you looking at for the nimravus?-154cm or the M2? If you are looking for a heavy duty knife for a nice price check out the Entrek line at 1SKS's web site. I'm looking at ordering one very soon. Just thought I'd add my opinion :D

Looks like we are looking almost for the same thing, Drew66. Although I narrowed my down to the Nimravus, Fallkniven S1, and SERE Operator, because I wanted at least a 4 inch blade, with almost 5 inches preferable.

I can say that I have a Nimravus Cub in M2, and it is one of my best all-around small fixed blades.

How about the Swamp Rat Bandicoot? Nice brown leather sheath, very subdued look on your belt. Awesome knife and just the right size for light duty, but you can go use it hard if you need to.
Something else you might consider, AG Russell has a Camillus/Simonich Talon made with 154CM (instead of Talonite) only $99. Nice looking knife, but it has a kydex sheath that might look a bit too obvious unless you can IWB it.
Sorry, but I've no experience with the ones you asked about.

go with the kabar impact i have one its great and has a real good feel to it. the blade does need a little touch up right out of the box i mean it will shave you out of the box but could stand to be alittle sharper. for the money you can't get a better knive.

DREW66!!??!?

fixed blades illegal in MI??? can you confirm this?

b/c... I live in ann arbor, and i carry my strider fixed every day...

I seem to remember reading somewhere that we get up to 4" on a fixed blade and 3" on a folding....

You got me panicking now....

I don't have any of the others, but the Yari is my best(favorite) knife. Maybe that's why...anyway, almost 5", nice micarta handle, good all-around geometry and steel. I like the sheath, add a teclok and it's very versitle, otherwise IWB only.

as far as production quality for your choices...benchmade is where's it's at right now. the nimravus rocks! it's e-z to sharpen in the field holds an edge really well even during heavy use, it's thin enough to handle delicate tasks and thick enough to pry bark off of trees for fire making and prying such things as clams is no problem. it's also balanced extremely well for self defense uses should the need arise. the sheath is also a selling point...it's very well made and makes the knife highly carryable. i've replaced my swamprat bandicoot with the nimravus because for me it's much more useable.

For a all around fixed blade, i would go with a Becker BK10. For the price u cant go wrong... U can get them for under $50, and the quality is just as good as the higher priced knives out there. It has a 5.5" blade with a full flat grind. The sheath is not that great, but at that price u can get a new sheath, and still be around $75.

I guess, after more than three years Drwe66 has made his choice.

If not, my vote goes to the Nimravus, even though i would like to see BM making that knife a bit more beefier at the spine.

Have to second Edge 969, I to have a D2 impact and find it pretty hard to beat even if you spend more cash!!!

I have no experience with either of the knives you mentioned, but I would think Bark River makes several knives you might want to look at before a final decision. My experience with them has been great (a NorthStar- 4" blade) as has many others. I'm guessing same price range as the BM.
