BM Nimravus vs. 710 vs. Ares vs. etc...

Well, I squeezed out a little more money out of my bank account, and now I have about $100 to spend on a knife for EDC.

I'm thinking either the Benchmade Nimravus or any of the higher-end AXIS mechanism knives (i.e., 805, Ares, etc.); I tried a Griptilian in my local military surplus store and I like the AXIS lock a lot. I also tried a Nimravus Cub and it felt fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything seriously wrong with any of these knives?

Thanks in advance. ;)

With the Nimravus, 806, 710, and a few others you can get D2 steel or M2. With is consider better the 154CM or 440c (as used in the Griptillian). I think the Nimravus looks really cool btw.

Note: I'm trying to get a 710 M2 and NO one has them. Not even Benchmade... :-(

BTW I plan to order a 520 with 154CM tomorrow. May want to check it out - looks pretty cool! It has a 3.42 inch blade. Most web sites have them for $115 or so. Oh! And it's a "Black" class. hehe

That maybe wasn't much help, but at least I bumped it up for someone else to reply.

The M2 steel is even more heavy-duty than 154CM, right?

I'm beginning to think the "black class" is just to sucker in all us "Tactical" types ;) .

Love my Ares, I've had it for 3 years and it is an anchor for my EDCs.

It's the fastest non auto I own, the 154 CM is a quality steel that holds an edge, rides low in the pocket, well balanced and the spearpoint blade is true utility.

M2 is suppose to keep a sharper edge longer, and also be easier to sharpen. In other words: Yes, it's more heavy-duty then 154CM.

I wish Benchmade used like VG-10 and S30V like Spyderco.

i love the 705 and the 710, although i don't have either yet. but i will get one soon. i do have the 941, and LOVE IT!

the AXIS is super "smooth" get anything with AXIS, and you won't regret it. but i would stay away from the 440C. go 154cm or better.

Just got my M2 710. I may "retire" the M2 AFCK. I am really impressed with the 710 - much more than I thought. M2 is really a great steel - I have had several M2 AFCKs.

I have both the 710 (154CM) as well as the little 705 (ATS-34)...Love 'em, as they are my trusty EDC's.

I'm also getting a 805 from a recent trade...(It might even be here tomorrow...:D.). It's blade is 440C steel, but I have no worries about it being an inferior steel.

Hahahaha, I got mine off of Ebay. For a whopping $70. The previous owner took very good care of it.

Yes, be jealous, very jealous. :D

Definitely check out the 94x series that Benchmade offers, they are top quality. I have a 943 that I have been carrying for close to a year now and it has performed flawlessly in every way, well worth the $110.00 price tag.

No matter what you choose you can't go wrong with any of the knives that you listed because they are all Benchmades.:D

I have an Ares in D2 (732D2sbt). Also have a 710 in 154CM, and recently a griptilian in 440c. I have to defend the 440c a little bit. Benchmade's heat treat of 440c is amazing. I would say it holds an edge almost as good as my older Eclpise folder which had ATS34 (similar to 154CM). Does that clear it up?

Anything Axis is going to rock. I find the handle of the Ares to be the best in BM's line, IMO. Excellent balance, spear point blade, and great reverse grip too.

Good luck

Robb

If you can swing it, and if you can legally carry a knife with an almost 4 inch blade, then by all means get a Benchmade 805 (or 806 if you like a hole rather than a thumb-stud). Today I received my 805, and it quickly became my FAVORITE folder, (even overtaking the Al Mar SERE 2000!!).

I also must defend Benchmade's 440C. I own several versions of Griptilians and they are among my finer-performing folders, especially my 550S. Their 440C seems to be ideally heat-treated to get the best out of the steel; other manufacturers' 440C may vary.
It may not be considered "the latest-greatest" nowadays but it is an old standby steel that, properly heat-treated, is an excellent but underrated performer.

I also own an Axis TSEK and that performs very well, too. The 710 (mine has 154CM blade steel) is another favorite and since Benchmade switched to phosphor-bronze washers on their Axis models, the actions are unbelievably smooth and don't seem to become "sticky" during temperature changes like some models with the older "nylatron"(?) washers sometimes did.

You really can't go wrong with a BM!
