I really don't know what is going on here, but I just can't get a razor edge on any of my Benchmades. Sure, I can get them sharp, just not to the same level I can with a Microtech for example. I have used a Lansky, benchstones, Sharpmaker and even a belt and a buffer. Nothing seems to work. I have owned Strykers, mini-Strykers, mini-AFCKs, Sentinels and an Emerson 970. Same with all of them. I used to attribute this to the ATS-34 and stayed clear of that. Picked up a couple of customs using this steel and realized it was definitely not the steel. I just received a secondhand 940 Osborne today. My hopes were high as this knife was using 154CM, and I have had great luck with my MT's using this steel. No such luck, same old ****

Have yet to see a true hair-popping edge. What is the problem with their steel? I have not had any problems with my other knives utilizing a variety of steels such as ATS-34, AUS6, 440C, 1095, 52100, 5160, 154CM, O1, A2. It took a while, but even that bear 420V came around and is sharp enough to make me nervous. So, has anyone out there managed to raise a truly, scary sharp edge on a Benchmade? If you have, please let me in on your secret.

I've got quite a little group of Bechmades and I've only had three problems but I'll attribute one of these to "I was still learning how to sharpen". The ONLY knife I've ever purchased new from Benchmade that was not to my liking edge-wise, is my model 710bts. It came with a not so sharp edge and I could not get a good edge on it. I sent it back to Benchmade and had them redo the edge as it looked a little thick to me. Got it back within 10 days with one hell of an edge, and it touches up on my Sharpmaker easily and is scary sharp. That was 6 months ago and it is still awesome. I've got a 975s and a 910s that I have to send bac now, th 910 will not sharpen for crap, but it is about 3 years old maybe older. Never abused and has not been carried in 2 years. It was one of the first production runs and feels like it's got a thicker grip than the current production. The 975s has to be sent back because the spacer is cracked and it needs some work on the titanium liner (lock side).
Overall, I could not be happier with my Benchmades and WILL continue to buy them.
I would suggest you send the knives back to Benchmade and ask them to realign the edge and sharpen it.

I honestly never had a problem sharpening any of my Benchmade knives. For most of my BM carries, I used the old Emerson series with the chisel grinds. I'm extremely good at sharpening chisel ground knives, so that may have helped me. Sorry you having so many problems with Benchmade knives.

I've dulled our mini-AFCK once since owning it. I went through the 4 steps with my sharpmaker(plain edge ATS-34), and then it was back to it's original factory scary sharp! Holds a better edge then anything I've tried yet, and boy is it easy to sharpen! RKBA!

Only problem I had was with a Leopard, it has a flat ground blade and I never had one of these before. Once I figured this out, I had no problems.

None of my BMs came to me very sharp but, except for the Leopard, they all came to a sharp edge quickly. (The Leopard did too..eventually.

) My 940 was the best...hair popping in just a few minutes.

It sounds like it. Honestly I just don't have the problems you are having.

Good luck,

I am going to close this thread. It is redundent in light of the General's thread about BM QC. Perhaps you can add additional comments there.
