I have no experience with the red-class knives or N690 - so I found a great deal on a Pika and was surprised to see the blade reads 440C when it arrived today. Anyone know whats up with that? Also - is N690 better worse than 440C?

Great inexpensive knife BTW. Solid lockup - no play and a torx adjustable pivot where some would use a permanent rivet.

I recently read that the first run was going to be in 440C. It might have a little more value in the future because of the 440C. Does yours say Taiwan on the blade?

Yes - Benchmade logo, Made in Taiwan, and 440C all stamped on the blade.

thats cool to know. now it will be worth 28 instead of the 24 I paid for it :)

Benchmade does list the Pika as having a blade of N690 on their site, however, I've got one stamped 1st Production Run 2003 in 440C. All the models are made in Taiwan.

The only knife I own with N690 steel is the Benchmade Monochrome. N690 is an Austrian steel and according to Benchmade's site, it is supposedly comparable to 440C. Extrema Ratio also uses the steel on some of their knives.

Here's a link to ER's steel chart:
