I really love the look and feel of the BM Rift - carbon fiber scales. But I have to ask...is it worth the extra money?

Highly considering it, but thought to see what some of you think about it first.

Thanks

From what I remember the carbon fiber version cost about $55 more than the regular version. It has the same blade so you are paying for the scales. If you were to have custom carbon fiber scales made it would cost quite a bit more than that. Plus the Benchmade scales have the 3D machining which custom scales wouldn't have. If you like the knife (I love the Rift) and you like the fancy high tech look of carbon fiber then I would say it is worth it. I have one and while I haven't used it yet I might eventually. I already have 2 EDC Rift including an M4 version so I probably don't NEED another EDC yet.

I think there were only 200 of the carbon fiber handled ones made. I am surprised there are still some left but I think there are. If you want a great looking knife go for it. I suggest using and enjoying it and not relinquish it to a drawer.

I like'em. I have 5 of the 950-801's.

Guess it depends if you like the Rift. It's one of my favorites.
I love my 950 with black & charcoal G10 so I couldn't resist the one with CF.

I got the 950-801 for $27 more, which seemed a extremely fair price.

So what did that bring the total to for the 950-801 that you purchased?

Which model? Which blade steel? There is a story behind the 154CM/CF Rifts.

Thanks for the compliments, it is my favorite Benchmade.:D

Pretty much mine too, though I'm also very fond of the 550HG Grip.

What makes that one particular 950-801 your favorite?

BTW, are you trying to corner the market on the CFs? ;)

Story? I thought they were made for Plaza?

What I read on another forum is that they were indeed made for Plaza and were out for sale at MSRP. Sales were slow and another online vendor put the Knife out for sale at a price that Works better for buyers. ;)

I really like the Rift - I think it's one of BM's best knives today. I also own one of the 950-801s, but I bought it only to take the CF scales off and put them on a 950-1001. Honestly, and I hate to say it, as a standalone purchase, I will try to say this politely, I think the 950-801 is a stretch, even at a discounted price. IMO, and I love CF, the knife is so great and so much cheaper with G10 that I'd go that way. BTW, I like the two-tone G10 MUCH better than the all-black, but YMMV.

Like JNewell, I like CF in general and the Rift is a brilliant design, but for appearance sake, I think that it is hard to beat the G10 version. Take the money you save and get some Blue Lube and cleaner, along with a case of your favorite beer. :D

I thought I had read that they were made for someone even before Plaza. Could be wrong.
Beautiful CF on this knife, if you like the Rift you owe to yourself to own one.

Corner the market:D, I always buy a few when I find a model I like. I like the rift just because it has a cool blade shape and interesting handle. Throw some carbon fiber on it and voila.

My made-up CF/CPM-M4 rocks! Maybe it's a 950-1801??? ;)

I just picked up the carbon fiber Rift and it was definitely worth the extra money to me. It's my first carbon fiber scaled knife. I'm sure the G10 version rocks also. I've seen the G10 version for around $113, and I paid $180 for the carbon fiber. I, too, was surprised there will still some available as it has been out for over a year. Very, very cool knife. The carbon fiber feels great in the hand. It has a very "hard" feel to it -- almost as if it were made out of stone.
